What Stinks? is a middle grade adventure novel, which is set in Rochester, NY. Mrs. Levine and her fifth grade students have been invited by Mayor Johnson to sing at the Lilac Festival in Rochester's Highland Park. While the students are learning about the history of the park and the flowers, Janie acquires a new pet. Unfortunately the pet leads to a feud between Janie and her best friend, Jeanetta. The feud spills over into the classroom, and a well-planned field trip ends in chaos as an unexpected visitor shows up. Meanwhile the students' benefactress, Granny Rob, uses some White Lilacs perfume to set in motion a nursing home romance.
