Overview

God isn't far away; He's near. God isn't watching from a distance; He's active and involved. God doesn't want to ruin your life; He wants to fulfill it. Too many people stumble through life with an inaccurate view of who God is. They believe in His existence, but don't know how to relate to Him in a practical and meaningful way. As a result, they fail to achieve anything beyond a superficial relationship with their Creator, and live less-than-fulfilling lives. In "WHATEVER, GOD", Fr. Anthony Messeh attempts to change that. He shares his unique story and the lessons he's learned that helped him go from a "don't-get-too-close-to-God-because-He-might-ruin-your-life" Christian, to a fully devoted "I-can't-get-enough-of-God-in-my-life" believer. In his own words, "I wrote this book to show you what that life can look like, and help you take a step or two to get there. My goal is to help you see where God wants you to be . . . how He wants you to live . . . and what your life should look like and could look like if you allowed Him to lead it for you." All you need is to say, "WHATEVER, GOD" and you'll see for yourself that God is REAL, God is RELEVANT, and God is always REWARDING.

When i first heard a rumor the rumor on twitter about Fr. Anthony writing a book, I jumped out of my seat to find out more details. I got a PDF before hand because i agreed to give an honest review, so hear it is. I have yet to finish the book so I can't give a full honest review but so far so good. My ultimate favorite part of the book so far is Fr. Anthony's sense of humor and the fact that i can literally hear his voice in the background. This book is definitely a page turner, I have a couple of chapters left and I've only been reading for about 3 days. Fr. Anthony puts every point he wants to get across in such an easy different perspective, whether its math or a juicy story, the way the book is written makes you open your eyes to such simple things that we all make so complicated in our daily lives. I personally can't wait to finish the book!

Is it a good book? Absolutely. Will it change my life? Well that depends... If you are a Christian, or someone who knows of some of Christianity’s practices, or someone who has had no contact with Christianity whatsoever, this book, Whatever, God, will speak to you regardless. Being a Coptic Orthodox Christian, Father Anthony’s book has touched on many issues I have with my own faith; concerning my perception of God and understanding why sometimes bad things happen. Father Anthony has infused the book with the very essence of his sermons: the humour, the practicality and his knowledge (if you have never listened to one of his sermons, you are greatly missing out!). As I was reading, I can hear the words being spoken in Father Anthony’s distinct voice and presentation style. I have read through ¾ of the book as of yet, and it is very difficult to put it down, truly a page turner! From Father Anthony’s recount of his life, to the discussion of certain aspects of spirituality to the beautifully narrated examples from the bible, his book has brought new light to spirituality and Christianity that I thought I already knew. While reading some of the obstacles we face when trying to strengthen our relationship with God, it seemed that the pages were made of mirrors, because in many of the discussions, I saw myself. I saw the struggles I’ve faced, and face, when trying to connect with the Ultimate Creator. I instantly felt connected, thinking, “I’m not the only one who feels this way”, which is so reassuring when you don’t know if your questions are the ‘bad’ sort of questions. Rather, Father Anthony ENCOURAGES us to think and to read more into the bible and to have a dialogue with God through prayer! (He even encourages us to take it a step further, but I’ll leave that chapter a surprise). I look forward to finishing the book, even rereading it on those nights you need a pick me up! It is a delightful, refreshing, comforting, fun, informative and easy read that I pray and wish will touch your life, just as it has with mine.

I had a personal goal to read 10 books this year... well, number 9 is done! I requested and received an advance copy of "Whatever, God" by Fr. Anthony, which releases tomorrow, and in exchange I promised an honest review. If you aren't going to read this entire review, that is ok... here is what you need to know... once loaded onto my eReader, the device predicted it would take eight hours of reading at my standard pace to finish... I finished it in six. The book, which spans about 200 pages, is a straight-forward and sometimes repetitive guide to understanding three concepts: God is Real, God is Relevant, and God is Rewarding. The repetition is important however as each chapter truly builds a new topic upon the foundation of the previous chapter or several chapters. I will not go into too much detail but in my opinion chapter eight, defining "good", was the best chapter in the book and the most thought provoking. I have known and heard hundreds [actually, thousands] of Fr. Anthony's sermons and lectures over the years but this book was NOT those sermons. This is truly a fresh perspective, with personal insights into Fr. Anthony's life that he shares in a way that only Fr. Anthony could (or would)!! At times you will find yourself highlighting and bookmarking (I bookmarked 37 pages myself for future reference) and at other times you will want to stop, reset, maybe say a prayer, and then continue reading. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone searching for a place to start a relationship with God, fix a relationship with God, or reset their understanding of what a relationship with Him is really all about.

It’s rare that you find a book that combines practical spirituality, heartwarming anecdotes, humor, and clear meaning. Father Anthony is a respected speaker and mentor who over the years convinced many (myself included) that life with God can be fulfilling while being fun and exciting. Finally, we have a book that captures some of his thoughts on paper. Using a mixture of personal storytelling, straightforward explanations of Biblical passages and a fresh look at what God is really like- this book is a unique one that gets better with each reading. It’s a fun, easy read that’s not trying to use lofty language to convince you to feel guilty about your messed-up lives. In fact, quite the opposite. This book shows us how much God loves us and how real and relevant He is to each one of our lives. I’ll definitely be re-reading this book again and gifting it to my friends and colleagues.

I absolutely loved the book "Whatever, God" by Fr. Anthony Messeh! Once I started it, I didn’t want to put the book down. It was a very easy read, making me laugh really hard at times, reflect on my own life and relationship with God, and making me want to further deepen my relationship with God. After starting the book, all I wanted to do was finish reading it. Then as I got closer to the end, I got sad that the book was going to finish. I just wanted to keep reading more. :) No matter where you are in your walk of faith with God, this is the perfect book for you. I hope this is just the beginning of a series of books to come that are written by Father Anthony! Thank you for such an enriching book! -Judy

"Whatever, God" was the best book I've read in a long time. It was an easy read and very powerful, and I felt like it was exactly what I needed to hear at the exact right time. After Fr. Anthony starts off telling his story, he continues to explain why God is real, relevant, and always rewarding in each of our lives. I highly recommend it for any one at any level in their faith- whether you have no knowledge of God at all or have been a faithful Christian for your entire life. You will not be disappointed!! Loved it! ~Sarah

The book is written in a very simple, entertaining and down to the ground approach. It is written in the way to educate any one at any level of spirituality, experience or social status. The book focuses on creating and strengthening a personal relationship with God. In my opinion, the author does a great job in clearing the image and fear we have about God. The book has 5 parts, I will try to put my learning: Part-I – Story about the Author: We(my husband and I) listen Fr. Anthony's sermons almost every week. It’s our Monday or Tuesday routine -- watching it after sending kids to bed. If we missed a week we feel as we miss something important in our week. Through his sermons we learnt a lot throughout the years. We are so grateful for that and may God bless Fr. Anthony more and widen his service to more people. From our virtual relationship with Fr. Anthony we have a self-made story about him. How he could grow up, what kind of personality he may had while he was young … etc. However, from the story part of the book Fr. Anthony told us his story. From this chapter, we learned that his upbringing and life is very similar to most people and the difference is not God favored him and consecrated him from child hood but He listens and says to Him “Whatever God” – that makes the difference. From his story, the one thing it strikes me the most is sharing his experience with and without God very honestly. From “don’t-get-too-close-to-God-because-He-might-ruin-your-life” to “I-can’t-get-enough-of-God-in-my-life”. The "from" expression looks like he is writing my story – sometimes I felt like that -- getting too close is so dangerous -- like inviting more trials.. You will find lots of interesting things that may look very familiar in your life. Part-2 – God is Real: In this part, the author mainly focus the importance of having a close relationship with God. You might heard about the importance of a relationship with God a million times but this book shows from a different perspective. The communication with God I knew before is like communicating with Him as if He is some superior person that exist just to monitor me -- to make sure His rule is respected. However, this part of the book discusses God is a loving, good and near father. From this part of the book I have clarity of the image I have about God. It also helped me to understand what I think "good" might not be absolutely good. However, what God says GOOD, it is absolutely GOOD. Part-3 - God is Relevant This part - I love the most. Looks like it's addressing me and telling me how I can improve my relationship with God. From this part I learned the relationship with God not only at good times. Even if things are not going in the way we hoped to, we still need to trust Him. This part also thought me how to “blame” God - I need to do some times. :-) Part – 4 – God is rewarding This is part of the book gives me tremendous hope. It thought me, our Lord Jesus Christ doesn’t left us alone. It discusses in depth about The Guide – The Paraclete. Part – 5 – Now it’s your turn. This is the most favorable thing I always love from Fr. Anthony. Even in his weekly sermon, after discussing for 4 or 5 weeks he doesn’t leave the topic without practical steps that benefit the listeners. Here also the same –the author tells me now is my turn to say “Whatever God” and the steps to say it. Wonderful Read! And strongly recommend!!!! May the lord bless your service Fr. Anthony.

I loved this book. I often listen to Fr. Anthony's talks online and this felt like he was in the room with me. Fr. Anthony is great at giving spiritual knowledge laced with real life examples and prompts so that we can take our faith and live it in everyday life. I am struggling right now to really understand what God wants from me in my life and this book has helped me a lot with that. Fr. Anthony gives personal and Biblical examples of how God talks to us and guides us through life. He also gives encouragement for those times when God hasn't responded to us, yet, and how to patiently wait on the Lord. I love that this book is deeply spiritual and practical and very accessible. Sometimes, when I read religious books, I get overwhelmed as a lot of it goes over my head. Fr. Anthony does a great job of giving simple, practical, and explicit ways to allow God into your life to fill your heart and guide you.

Stunning simplicity singles out that book among many other spiritual writings of these days. Father Anthony does not waste his time in using flowery or overspiritualized phrases. Describing his conversion experience the author is rather slow to give you all the details. As he takes you on a journey across seasons of his spiritual life he keeps the long forgotten simplicity and intimacy. At the same time there are hints and insights scattered across that book which will challenge your thinking and perception of God. This book will encourage you to take steps on the unknown, Whatever, God pilgrimage. Still, this piece of writing is rooted in everyday life so do not be surprised to come across an amazing chocolate chip pancakes recipe, which portrays God's goodness and wisdom. If I were to choose one chapter that impacted my own way of thinking that would be the story of Jesus, Apostle Andrew and five loaves and two fish. This is also another reason why I recommend that book and believe everyone can find there something what applies to his life.

As soon as I got this I dug in & couldn't put it down. I was captivated by how simple this book was to read & understand & yet how powerful & profoundly insightful this book was. I especially liked the analogies he used that were interesting & practical. I enjoyed reading Father Anthony's personal story. He comes across as a priest one can relate too & strikes me as super down to earth & authentic. Father Anthony does not use a lot of pretenses & verbiage, he keeps it simple yet he goes deep, with using lots of humor to boot! He encourages the reader to step outside the box from some mainstream ideas while still keeping in tradition. I'm not Coptic Orthodox (I'm Baptist) but I feel this book is absolutely universally applicable no matter what your faith is. Father Anthony wants to show us how to have a deeper relationship with God & reminds us that God is never too far, there is always hope & a relationship with God can be so enriching, rewarding & joyful, even if it's not always easy. I hope one day I can be as passionate & all-in as he is. I've followed Father Anthony for quite awhile via youtube & podcasts, he's such an inspiration & this book was a home run!

Fr Anthony takes us on a journey from from a faraway mystical (and maybe even boring) God to an intimate relationship with our Creator we are all meant to enjoy. I found myself relating to him as he discusses the various obstacles he faced as he fought the good fight. Do you want the road map to peace that no one can take from you? READ THIS BOOK

It is one of the greatest books I’ve read this year. It is very personal, intuitive and very relatable with an added dose of the usual Fr. Anthony sense of humor. It is engaging and hard to put down once you start reading. Most of us think we have God figured out; we’ve put Him in a box where we only look for Him in our time of need. But the problem is that’s not who God is. As Fr. Anthony put it, God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) is REAL, RELEVANT and REWARDING. A life spent knowing Him is far better than a life spent without Him, for “God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him”. Fr. Anthony goes on to show how knowing God and accepting His will has helped him live the abundant life that Christ promised and we can also do likewise. This book has led me like the star that led the three wise men to Christ. I hope God will use this book to reach and bless as many people as it has blessed me.

Having listened to Abouna Anthony through his YouTube channel for several years now and applying his teachings to my personal life to better myself as an Orthodox Christian, I was ecstatic to learn that he had written a book and it was soon to release. I am ½ way through the book and I can honestly say that I LOVE how Abouna Anthony is able to speak to us on such a personal level. His examples hit home and enables us to relate and understand the Bible more, consequently bringing us closer to Christ. If you’ve ever listened to his YouTube videos, you immediately notice how every word you read is EXACTLY how he would speak – with the animated and comical side remarks. The book opens up with his own personal stories related to the title of the book, “Whatever, God” and then continues into a more in-depth understanding of what that title means and should me to us, and how we can further improve our quality of life. Abouna Anthony is not overly theological, but that's to ensure that his readers are able to relate, comprehend and actually make something out of his teachings so that it will further supplement an individual’s spiritual life. So happy Abouna Anthony wrote this book and I hope he is encouraged to write more in the near future!

I have never met Fr. Anthony yet somehow I feel like I know him. "Whatever God" is written with masterful, practical suggestions that draw you into the story - whether it be biblical or practical example. I am so glad he got to this point - writing a Book! His words need to be read and known to many! This books explains the great richness we have in Christ Our God. Fr. Anthony has a comical flare to his writing. The book is easy to read and truly is a precious gem! I can't recommend this book enough to those who thirst for meaning in their life or to those who need a spiritual recharge. You will learn, laugh and love this book - I promise. God Bless You Fr. Anthony and thank you for writing this glorious book.

I highly recommend this book. It was simply written, easy to comprehend, and portrays a realistic perspective of how to submit to the will of God, particularly the plan He has for each one of us. Fr. Anthony has done it again, found a way to reach not just the "lost" but every person who reads this book.

Love this book! Fr. Anthony, in his own witty style, takes what I always thought was complicated and confusing about God and simplifies it in a way that only he can. He presents fundamental truths about God--God is real, relevant and rewarding--in ways that are easy to understand. He shares his own personal life stories and Biblical examples to clearly illustrate who God is and who He isn't. I personally LOVE chapter 8 (He is a Good Father) and chapter 13 (When God Messes Up Your Plans). They address the most difficult questions we ask ourselves about God--"If God is good, then why doesn't He stop all the bad in this world?" and "This wasn't suppose to happen God! Why did You mess up the great plan I had for my life?" If you've never heard Fr. Anthony's sermons, especially when he's telling a story from the Bible, then you're missing out! He shares stories that you've probably heard and read hundreds of times, but he has an amazing gift for storytelling that puts you right in the heart of the story, as if you're really witnessing Joseph's brothers standing in front of him asking for food without even knowing that this is the same brother they sold into slavery years earlier. When he tells the story of Feeding the 5,000, you feel like you're there and begin to wonder if you would focus on what you lacked like Philip did or focus on what you had like Andrew did. His love for God's word is contagious and you'll start to think, "THAT'S in the Bible? How did I miss that? I gotta go read my Bible more." Loved every part of the book, but the conclusion is a personal favorite. The last story in chapter 20 makes you realize what a wonderful, gracious Father we all have in Christ!

“Whatever, God” is truly a phenomenal book and if your shelf doesn’t have this book yet, then you’re honestly missing out on a life changing opportunity. I was introduced to Fr. Anthony’s sermons by a good friend around 3 years ago so I welcomed the news of his new book with great EXCITEMENT! Reading his book was like listening to him in my mind with the hand gestures and the humor (which this book is full of). Why I believe this is a MUST READ is because I believe many of us have a superficial relationship with God (for most part because we don’t know what a sincere relationship with Him is really like). That’s where this book comes in handy because it gives PRACTICAL ways we can build (or mend) relationship with our HEAVENLY FATHER. The book also gives insight into the notion that saying “Whatever, God” will not come as an easy experience (since if you’re like me, you would want to take on the impossible task of controlling every aspect of your life) but it surely is simple and REWARDING. The book also helps clear whatever misconception we may have of God and guides in way we get to practice what we read. This is the kind of book that I will ABSOLUTELY re-read and use as a reference and guide for MANY MANY MANY years to come because it has helped change the view I have for God and the view I had for myself. I wish you all a good read.

After having enjoyed many of Fr. Anthony's sermons, and lectures (unfortunately from afar), I had great expectations for this book. I am so happy to report that it was as engaging, accessible, and deeply spiritually rich as many of Fr. Anthony's materials are. The book provides a context and a framework for essential theological questions, in an intimate and throughly accessible approach. A beneficial read for spiritual individuals, Orthodox, Christian and not alike from many different backgrounds and paths. After reading through the book, much quicker than I expected, I found myself highlighting and bookmarking phrases and questions to later inform my prayer and my practice. In only a way Father Anthony can do, the pragmatism of a daily lived theology is delivered without stripping the beauty and the intricacy of God's Word and teachings. A must read for anyone that has felt despair, or complacent, or seeking invigoration in their faith, their life and their relationship with God can find uniquely personal messages in this text. And yet don't let me downplay the humor and the joy and the intimacy with which this book allows for laughter and a quiet smile. Highly highly recommend! I plan on referencing this myself, as I already have in the past week, and am happy to have found a beautiful gift sending out as gifts as we enter this holiday season.

Such a great read! I'm only through about half of the book but I feel like I can't put it down! Father Anthony's writing style connects with you on a personal level. You almost feel like you are having a normal, casual conversation as he takes you on his life journey in his walk with God. "Whatever, God" illustrates the sweetness of submitting your will with God's will. It shows that although it might not be easy at times, it is fulfilling and satisfying. A truly inspiring book, and one that truly shows how God is real, relevant, and rewarding in our everyday lives. Highly recommended!

A must read!! I have followed Fr.Anthony with his YouTube, blog and periscope for a couple of years now. He is indeed gifted to share God’s word in the most simple and relatable way. I was very excited and I had a lot of expectations when I learnt he wrote a book. I am half way through in my reading and I can say it has surpassed my expectations. What I love most about the book is how Fr.Anthony share his most personal experience even though he is cringing to write about it. This just gives power to the main point of the book which is to say ‘Whatever’ to God. The personal experiences, scripture stories, practical steps and prayer guidance makes this book a must read.
