Tess is burdened with a responsibility she’s not quite sure she can handle, and Ryan is determined to save her from it—if she ever stops pushing him away—in this sexy follow-up to Right Where You Are, the first new adult novel in the captivating Second Chances series.

Tess is a lot of things. Strong. Independent. Determined. Completely overwhelmed by the responsibilities of being her little brother’s caretaker. But she can handle it. She has to. Because there’s no way in hell she’s letting anyone else raise Noah.

Ryan’s happy with a life on cruise control. He has no intention of tying himself down. That road only leads to heartbreak, a lesson he learned the hard way when he was fifteen. So why can’t he stay away from the one woman who broke his heart?

Tess knows exactly why Ryan keeps popping up right when she needs the most help: He’s got a hero complex big enough to save Cinderella. But Tess isn’t that girl, and she refuses to let him be part of her life. Not even when Noah takes a liking to him. Not even when they kind of, maybe, hook up.

Not even when she starts to fall for him…

Tess is having a hard time in her life. She is trying to make ends meet, finish college and raise her little brother. Ryan, her old boyfriend, steps back into the picture. He is determined to keep her from failing. This story took me by surprise. I am a notorious insomniac. I usually end up reading about an hour or so in the middle of the night. I picked this book up during one of my "bouts of insomnia" (sigh). When I looked at my clock, it was 4:30AM. I had been so engrossed in this story, I think I read about 4 hours non stop. One of the attractions for me in this tale is, it is so real. The struggles Tess faces are so common in real life. The story is so relatable. Tess is a very strong woman character. She makes tough choices and works hard. Ryan is also, just a regular guy. Don't we all want a knight in shining armor to save the day. Ryan is that knight. He wants to "fix" all that is wrong in Tess' life. This is a fabulous "real life" novel with real characters and events. I am really looking forward to another issue of the "Second Chance Series". I received this novel from Simon and Schuster as part of the XOXpert

3.5 stars-- WHAT EVER IT TAKES is the second installment in L.E. Bross’s contemporary, new adult SECOND CHANCES romance series. This is twenty two year old construction worker Ryan, and bartender Tess’s storyline. WHATEVER IT TAKES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous book is revealed where necessary. Told from alternating first person points of view (Ryan and Tess) WHATEVER IT TAKES is a story of second chances for Ryan and Tess. Growing up together Ryan and Tess were best friends, fell in love then Tess moved away without looking back. Fast forward to present day where Tess finds herself a single parent to her four year old brother Noah while her father sits in jail making plans for his future. Seeing Ryan again after all these years has thrown Tess for a loop, and old feelings begin to surface when Ryan starts looking for a possible second chance. Ryan’s mother left when our hero was a teen, and in the ensuing years Ryan’s father checked out of his life. Ryan has become his father’s caretaker and also the main breadwinner so that the family is able to eat. Tess moved away for a shot at a better life, but her father’s illegal activities and pursuits have found Tess looking after a little brother who becomes her heart and her world. When Tess’s father offers up Noah to the highest bidder, Ryan steps in to save the day. The relationship between Tess and Ryan has already been established. Ryan has never been able to forget about the girl who walked away without a second glance. Tees has always loved Ryan, but her immediate future includes plans to keep Noah safe and out of the hands of strangers. Ryan’s slow seduction of Tess finds our couple rekindling a love that has never died. The $ex scenes are limited but provocative and intense. The secondary and supporting characters include Seth and Avery from book one –RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE- as well as some of Tess’s co-workers at the bar; her brother Noah, and their father who attempts to cash in on his family’s hardships. WHAT EVER IT TAKES captures all of the New Adult emotional highs and lows; second chances; growing up too fast; and the angst of first loves and a happily ever after. Once again, I did have issue with the quick, conflict resolution as well as the actual circumstances as to how and why. I am not sure if the legal system would have allowed the father so much power behind bars; I am thinking the judge and the lawyers would have been able to put a stop to everything that was going down, especially under the circumstances and the reasons Tess’s father was behind bars.

Loved it!! Great story of two strong, determined characters that are willing to do whatever it takes to care for the ones they love. Tess and Ryan where young sweethearts but when she moved away to live with her dad they grew apart but neither has forgotten the other. Now she's back with a world of responsibility on her shoulders. Ryan is rolling through life. Caring for his father is the only responsibility he can carry right now. When he sees Tess again for the first time in years though he can't seem to stay away. She may have broken his heart all those years ago but she may also be exactly what his heart needs now. He wants to help Tess shoulder some of her worries but can he convince her to let him?? This is a great read and I highly recommend it for everyone.
