K-Gr 2-Four offerings that give up-to-date information about community helpers and agencies. Clear photographs, lots of white space, and short sentences make the books easy to read. However, they suffer from inconsistencies. Each opening spread features small photographs of the things to be discussed in the text. It would be a perfect table of contents, except that the pictures are arranged alphabetically rather than in order of appearance. A glossary of "Challenge Words" defines some of the more technical terms, but gives a pronunciation key for only a few. Even these can be confusing (siren's pronunciation is given as "sigh-run"). On the plus side, male and female role models are shown and different ethnic groups are represented. As there are few books about firefighters and police officers for beginning readers, these books might suffice in a pinch; otherwise, wait until something better is published.-Anne Knickerbocker, formerly at Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
