About the Author

I was born in Scotland. My wife and I have been married for over 40 years and have two children and three grandchildren. We left Scotland in 1981 and settled in Thousand Oaks, California where we lived for 20 years before relocating to Austin Texas, where we now live. I am an engineer by profession having spent most of my professional working life in the enterprise software industry. I retired from the software industry in 2014 and now write crime fiction novels. The Detective Bill Ross Crime Series follows the exploits of Bill Ross a retired Scottish police detective now living in Austin. He spent a long and successful career with the London Metropolitan police Major Crime division in their cold case unit. Today he volunteers with the Travis County police cold case team where is son Tommy (a former US Marine) is a detective. My inspiration to write crime fiction came from reading the works of many of the great crime writers. I am particularly passionate about Scottish crime fiction writers. This group of writers, referred to by some as Tartan Noir, include Ian Rankin, Denise Mena and of course William McIlvanney. Some additional information about me: 1.I has have travelled the world extensively. 2.I am a trained chef. 3.I love golf. 4.I lived in Germany for two years. 5.I worked for many years with the US Department of Defense. 6.I have been on a nuclear submarine and have driven a tank.

Okay, I do not even know where to begin because so much happens and I don’t want to give anything away… “What’s Left is Right” by author Irving Munro is just flat out interesting mystery/thriller/suspense/novel that is easy to read and hard to put down. I liked it for so many different reasons, first the writing was great. The strong word choice and fluid prose and authentic dialogue with the characters (especially in regards to ‘police and military speak’) makes it a very easy book to lose yourself in. There are enough descriptions where you can picture everything perfectly, but not so much that it bogs down the pacing. The interweaving plotlines were complex enough to keep me interested and engaged, but no so much where you get confused…All leading to a satisfying, bittersweet ending. Ready for more Bill Ross and team!

when I started reading this book, “What’s Left is Right” by Irving Munro, I just didn't want to stop until I’d finished the whole thing. There are so many great characters (good and bad) and the suspense throughout the book just keeps building and building and kept me wanting to read on……. Was just so weird and creepily original. I like murder mystery and suspense/thrillers, but I can honestly say I’ve never read a book like this! Recommend for those that enjoy a good thriller that is intelligent and well developed and unpredictable and really twisted – and I mean that in a good way. For older readers only who aren’t squeamish prudes. 4.5 stars

what a ride! Although I did enjoy the first book in the Detective Bill Ross Crime Series by Irving Munro, I thought it could use some work, so I was a bit apprehensive in reading the second one. Well I was actually surprised by how much I liked this sequel even better! It maintained the same sort of tone and complex plotlines, with characters I liked in the first one, but greatly improved on the execution, editing and formatting. This really made a huge difference for me in my level of enjoyment and it’s nice to see an author taking such great strides in his work. I can’t wait to see where Mr. Munro takes Bill and Tommy and the others next! Recommend for fans of murder mysteries, police drama, and crime thrillers.

when I read books like this, usually I either like the dialogue, and the narrative seems flat (or too telling and long-winded) or the characters are great, but the plot seems contrived and obvious. But I loved how seamlessly everything flowed in “What’s Left is Right” with the balance between the intriguing plotlines and the strong writing and characters made it feel authentic and well- paced. I didn’t want to stop reading until I was finished. And honestly my only complaint was all the italics at the end, as I always find those so tiring to read (and unnecessary.) But a very strong follow up to “The End of Summer”, and I think that “What’s Left is Right” has all the elements necessary to please even the pickiest fan of the genre. Lots of language and some disturbing scenes, so it is best suited for adults.

I really enjoyed “What’s Left is Right”, perhaps even more than the other book I read in this series, as I thought this one to be much better written, and the plot more fully-realized. The editing was markedly improved as well, and the story still maintained the elements that I enjoyed in the first one, how it has some surprising twists and it wasn’t predictable or cliché, which is a rare find in this genre. Liked the witty dialogue and the local Texas flavor and history. Overall a well-rounded, nicely polished murder mystery that is authentic, engaging, and entertaining.
