About the Author

Geraldine O’Dowd is a Consultant Diagnostic Pathologist for Lanarkshire NHS Board and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Glasgow, Glasgow. Geraldine lead the author team on the most recent edition of Wheater’s Pathology, as well as being both a previous author on the 5th edition of that title and an author on the 6th edition of Wheater’s Functional Histology

This is a fourth edition color atlas of histology. The third edition was published in 1993. The editors' intent is to provide current thinking, insights, and interpretations about histology with an emphasis on functional aspects of this topic. These are worthy objectives and are very nicely attained. The book is written for beginning students of histology, and as such it is well written and illustrated to serve that audience. The editors are experts in histology. The standard topics in histology are covered in a classical approach, which is highly appropriate. There are a number of places where the editors redefine some classical concepts, most of which are valid, although some of these redefinitions may be controversial to other experts. A CD-ROM with all the images included in the text is included; the images can be exported to other applications or made into a slide show of their own for use in a lecture setting. This is a distinct improvement over the third edition. It is much more up-to-date, contains a number of new and better images, is well written, and includes a high quality CD-ROM. With this edition the editors move the book much more in the direction of a textbook of histology than the earlier ones. As such, it is not quite up to the standards of major histology texts such as Fawcett's Bloom and Fawcett: Concise Histology (Chapman & Hall, 1997), or Ross' Histology: A Text and Atlas, 3rd Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1995). As an atlas it is as good as some -- Berman's Color Atlas of Basic Histology, 2nd Edition (Appleton & Lange, 1998) or Gartner's Color Atlas of Histology, 3rd Edition (LippincottWilliams & Wilkins, 2000), but it is not as good as Kerr's Atlas of Functional Histology (Mosby, 1999).
