When a Laird Loves a Lady by Julie Johnstone

A need to belong drives her. A longing to forget compels him. Fate may send them into each other's arms, but only love can mend their hearts.

An Outlander

Raised by a tyrannical father, Marion de Lacy yearns for the comfort of belonging to a loving family. So when her father announces her betrothal to an evil knight in exchange for his help to overthrow the king, she concocts a desperate scheme to avoid the marriage: feigning her own death and then fleeing England. But when her plan goes terribly awry and she's captured by the knight, not even her careful preparations could ready her for the Scottish barbarian who rescues her and then informs her that he's to marry her by edict of her king. Certain her father will defy the king's orders and wed her to the knight if she refuses the Highlander's hand, Marion agrees to marry the strangely compelling but obstinate laird of the MacLeod clan.

A Highlander

After the death of his beloved wife, Iain MacLeod has no desire to marry ever again. Yet when he finds himself obliged to do so to secure the freedom of his childhood friend and king, he reluctantly travels across England to collect his unwanted bride, expecting to find a cold Englishwoman. Instead, he discovers a fiery, bold beauty who is fiercely loyal, protective of those she loves, and defies him at every turn, challenging his certainty that his heart is dead.

Following a hasty marriage and perilous journey to Scotland, Marion harbors no illusions that her new husband loves her. Still, her heart cannot resist the noble, brave warrior, and she cannot suppress the hope that she has finally found where she belongs. However, the harder she tries to fit in with the clan and gain Iain's love, the farther away her dreams drift. Iain is more than willing to give his respect to his courageous wife--her kisses and caresses even ignite his blood and demand his passion--but he refuses to give up his heart. That is, until enemies near and far threaten to take Marion from him. Now the demons that haunt him can only be conquered by surrendering body and soul to Marion, if only it's not too late...

I just finished reading "When a Laird Loves a Lady" and I must say I am looking forward to the next in the series. Ms. Johnstone has created a story filled with romance, angst, and suspense. The book also appears to have been well researched and attention paid toward accurate period dialogue. As to the "H" and "h," Iain and Marion are both intriguing characters who have painful pasts and yet find strength in themselves and ultimately each other. There is surprise after surprise in this book...so, as the reader, you are always eagerly turning the next page. I was so invested in finding out what would happen next that I read the book in one sitting...a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. Without giving away to much of the story, the scene with Marion in the green wedding dress actually caused me to get a little teary. You know you've found a keeper for your library when that happens! Thank you to the author for a lovely story. P.S. The book cover is gorgeous too!

I adore Ms. Johnstone's writing and when I heard she was going to write her first Medieval story, I did a happy dance and was not disappointed. As with her other books, the scenes are descriptive. The characters are ones you can relate to even when you want to wring their necks. The story has the right blend of emotion and humor. There's treachery and treason at work and I was immediately drawn into this world and didn't want to stop reading until the end. The heroine, Marion, is beaten but not broken after a lifetime of neglect, abuse and belittling, is finally able to shine under the kindness of her new husband and his people. The hero, Iain, is dynamic, intelligent, strong, dangerous and more than able to protect all those in his care, including his new wife who he vows not to love after the loss he has suffered but love will not be denied even when the enemy makes their move. I received an ARC for an honest review. Medieval stories are my favorite romance sub-genre so I'm stoked to read more from this new series!

When I heard that author, Julie Johnstone was writing a medieval tale with a brooding Scottish rogue, I was elated. I truly enjoy everything Ms. Johnstone has written and consider her a go-to author. When a Laird Loves A Lady is a fabulous first in the Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts series. Two very different people not so different in their wants and desires. Marion de Lacey is being used by her father for a means to his misguided ends and Marion wants no part of it. Her traitorous father has betrothed her to an odious knight who would align himself with Marion's father to overthrow their king. This knight is the last man on earth who she wishes to marry. Along with some of her loyal friends, she comes up with a plan to seek refuge in Scotland but plans go awry and Marion finds herself in danger. Highlander Iain MacLeod has been through much in his life and after losing his beloved wife he never wanted to go down the marriage route again, but duty calls and when Iain attempts to retrieve the bride his king decrees he marry, Iain discovers there are many dark dealings going on with de Lacey and his underlings. On his journey home, he comes upon Marion de Lacey and so their tale of adventure begins. A quick wedding ceremony ensues in hopes to thwart any of her father's plans, but it will take more than that for Iain and Marion to come to terms with their unstable future ahead. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book! When a Laird Loves a Lady is a sweeping story with a beautiful backdrop. In this unsteady time these two amazing people will do what they must to assure good over evil prevails. Both Iain and Marion are brilliant characters with determination and for as much as Iain would like to keep Marion at arms length, that task is impossible with a lady with as much pluck and courage. Their desire for one another is evident and adds so much to this wonderful story. It is a page-turner and I applaud Julie Johnstone for her first foray into a new era... I want the next one NOW!

"Romance, Adventure, and Devotion" An absolutely exhilarating, fast paced, romantic Scottish love story. I was immediately pulled in by the brooding Scottish Laird and the beautiful, delicate Marion. The characters, the plot, the setting, and even the secondary characters were so accurate and riveting that I didn't want to put the book down, or turn off the audio. Ms. Johnstone always writes beautiful, intriguing stories, but I admit to being partial to Scottish love stories. Mr. Tim Campbell is an amazing narrator. He does an excellent job with the varied characters and their accents. He does give Ian a very sexy Scottish rogue.

This is the first review I've ever written on a book and I've read hundreds. I love historical romances and after you read so many it's hard to find one that excited you. It's like a fix (I'm sure all you faithful readers know what I mean). This is one of those books that you get lucky to find possibly after reading a few disappointing ones. When you search for your next book read reviews over and over until you decide. I got lucky with this one. I loved it!! From the first page until the last. It was never boring, it had humor which I love in a good book. I loved the characters and the writing. I can't wait for the next book in this series!!!

Marion de Lacy is determined to take the control of who she marries from her diabolical father’s hands with a well thought out plan of escape. Alas, things have to be hurried along as her fiancée arrives sooner than expected. Set upon by the very person she is running from and rescued by a man she soon learns is her only hope for escape. Marion is forced to decide which of the lesser of two evils to take. Neither of which will provide the love she so longs to have. Iain MacLeod is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife when he is summoned to England for discussions on the release of the Scottish King. He’s to suffer another blow when a condition of the King’s release is that Iain marry the daughter of a Baron, who the English King believes is in a conspiracy to overthrow the throne. Resigned to a life with a spoiled Englishwoman Iain is relieved to learn he will not have to go through with the wedding as his bride has unexpectedly died. He’s surprised to learn that the woman he comes upon being bullied in a small village is actually the cold Englishwoman he thought he would be saddled with for the rest of his life. Evil and unscrupulous persons, a former love and misunderstandings all stand in the way of what Iain and Marion come to learn is love. These two will need all the strength and determination to accept that love and to overcome all the obstacles in their way for a happily ever after. Julie Johnstone’s first foray into Medieval Romance is a huge hit! Ms. Johnstone captures your attention from the first paragraph and doesn’t let go until “THE END” is written. She has written Marion as a woman of strength and determination with an inner heart in need of love. Iain is the loyal, family oriented Scottish Laird who has little problem accepting what he must for the sake of his family and King. Then she throws in twists and turns but don’t get comfortable thinking you know who the bad person is…she’ll throw you for a loop. Not only are her hero and heroine characters interesting, she also writes her secondary characters in a way that will have you dying for their story without taking away from the hero and heroine. Excitedly waiting to see who is next!

It's entertaining and funny with a lot of action. I can't wait for the next book.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. I would suggest reading up a little bit on the meaning of words when she uses the Scottish words. Sometimes I did not understand the meaning of the sentence and had to read it multiple times. I am always for a strong man with who has a soft spot, and can love a women thoroughly as she deserves to be loved. I love strong female characters! I really enjoyed the descriptions of the land. If you are reading this review I do not like to tell you what happens in the book, because I think that takes away from how you would draw your own conclusions. I think that Julie Johnstone writes a wonderfully paced book that you will enjoy reading and I am looking forward to hearing from the other characters in the book. Enjoy!!!

This is the first book I've read by this author and it won't be the last. I give 5 stars when the book is well written, very minor grammar or editing errors, and when the story holds my attention and I want to read it all in one sitting. Marion de Lacy, 1/2 English, 1/2 Scot, is ordered by King Edward to marry Scottish Laird Iain MacLeod as her father plots to take Edward's throne. Iain agrees to marry her in the hope that Edward will release King David of Scotland. Iain is a widower and has sworn never to love again, but is very attracted to Marion. This is nowhere near all that is going on but I don't like or write plot spoilers. Of course, there is a villain intent on marrying Marion for her lands and happy to kill Iain for them. Also, jealous clan women who hoped to marry the widowed laird themselves. There are several sub-plots going on. Iain has 3 brothers and I'm hoping they get their own stories as I really enjoyed this book.

When a Laird Loves a Lady by Julie Johnstone Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts Series Book One Marion de Lacy just wants to be loved. Her father never loved her and now he wants to marry her off to a cruel knight. Never. She'd rather die...or maybe pretend she's dead so she can escape. Her plans didn't quite go as planned since King Edward had another idea for her life. Laird Iain MacLeod had been married once and that was enough for him. Loving his wife and losing her was too much grief to bear. And now that he finds himself having to marry again...he decides to keep his heart to himself. He may not give his heart but he doesn't mind giving his new wife his body. I enjoy the medieval era setting that this series takes place in. Some great twists and turns add to the story. Both of their pasts add to who they are; Marion wanting love and Iain feeling guilty. There are so many wonderful secondary characters that I'm really looking forward to this series. **Sexual content within marriage

I've never read a Highlander romance before, but I am so glad that this was my first! This was an amazing story set in 14th century Scotland. Marion de Lacy, in a desperate attempt to escape from an arranged marriage and a tyrannical father, finds herself suddenly married to Iain MacLeod, a man who has suffered loss and has no intentions of dealing with heartbreak again. The story is fast-paced and full of danger, adventure, and romance. I love Marion, as she is a strong-willed woman, loyal and always looking to protect those around her. Her compassion is evident from the beginning, even caring for the very knights that seek to keep her under her father's rule. Iain is the type of alpha male you cannot help falling for as soon as you meet him. Strong, obviously handsome, and loyal as well. Early on, he states (paraphrasing here) that even though he does not want to marry Marion, it's his job to protect her. I mean, what girl wouldn't love a man like that? This was a great read, full of excitement, that makes you want to hurry up and turn the page to see what happens next! I definitely recommend it and give it five stars!

Captivating Scottish adventure! When I discovered, that Julie Johnstone, had written a book in a new genre for her, I had to read it! When I started to read it, I didn’t know what to expect, what a beautiful surprise! I always loved her stories set during the Regency-Victorian period! So this Scottish tale was a must to read! I’m so happy I gave it a try! I really loved, When A Laird Loves A Lady! It was fast paced, filled with passion and adventure, action packed! I could not put it down! It kept my attention until the end! Beautiful chemistry between Marian de Lacy and and sexy highlander Iain MacLeod. It tells the sweet story of Iain, a young Scottish widow, who doesn't want to love again, fearing another lost, and heroine Marion, a young woman, in search of acceptance and love. To escape a marriage of convenience, Marion fakes her death. Meanwhile, the King, orders Iain, to marry the fiery and determine lady. Just follow their journey filled with twists and turns! If you love to read stories of Scottish highlanders, well written, then you have found the perfect book to read. I strongly recommend it.

Highlander sensuality, protectiveness, intensity. . . There are some reading material that I will drop everything for. It just so happen that When a Laird Loves a Lady was one of them. Hot, hunky, highland lover tops the charts for reads that I have to have. And let us not for get the sexy brogue. I have this one on my must read again and again. I look forward to each new addition to this series. I will keep a look out. Two people with different in the make up and similar in the needs and desires. I found that the road each traveled to make it to that point where their needs and desires were each other. **This ARC was provided via Historical Fiction Virtual Tour Books in exchange for an honest review.** More @ http://mileythebookjunkie.blogspot.com/2016/03/when-laird-loves-lady-by-johnstone.html

This is book 1 in the Highlander Voves: Entangled Hearts series. Marion de Lacy's father is marrying her off to an evil baron to gain access to soldiers. She isn't about to do what her father demands, so she has made plans to run off to Scotland and seek help from her mother's clan. She didn't count on the King stepping in and changing her plans. Iain MacLeod has been ordered by the king to marry Marion. The king has uncovered a plot to overturn his rule and if Marion marries Iain he has a better chance of stopping the rebellion. Having loved and lost his first wife, Iain tells Marion that he will never love her. Knowing her only other option is to marry a man she despises, Marion agrees to marry Iain. Can this marriage of convience bloom into one of love? I really enjoyed this story. I always love when the heroine is strong willed and a little out of the ordinary. Marion is definitely strong willed and has learned to protect herself with the help of a friend. This is definitely not your typical society miss. I liked Iain too. He was a hardened warrior, but he also had his soft side which came out when he was dealing with Marion. This is my first novel by Johnstone, although I've been wanting to her her stuff for awhile now. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series! Thanks go out to Night Shift Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

This was a gritty and intriguing story. Because of the lack of love in her home life, Marion wanted only to marry for love. Her father has other plans. Iain lost the love of his life and is determined to never love again. The fates do not again. To rescue his King, Iain must marry Marion as part of a strategic alliance. Marion and Iain fight their feelings through their adventures until there is no question. At points throughout the story, I felt so connected to some of the characters and I look forward to more stories. I recommend this book.

This was my first book by Julie Johnstone. I have no idea how her books have escaped my attention up to now but I can assure you it won't happen again. Set in medieval Scotland, When a Laird Loves a Lady is a fast-paced, action-packed story filled with intrigue and betrayal. It's also a passionate, poignant romance between a bold, loyal, and loving young Englishwoman who yearns for a family that will love her and not view her only as a political pawn and an honorable Scottish laird who buried his heart with his late wife and has no intention of ever loving again. Put it all together and you have a story that grabbed me from the beginning and kept me flipping pages until I reached the final, sigh-worthy, conclusion, long past my bedtime. Ms. Johnstone has a gift for bringing her characters and the time in which they lived to life in vivid detail, immersing readers into a world filled with joy, despair, and danger. The intrigue, the battles, the deep emotion; I experienced it all right along with the characters. Johnstone has assembled a rich cast including many supporting characters who are fairly begging for their own stories to be told. I don't know how many books Ms. Johnstone has planned for her Highlander Vows series but I can assure you that however many she writes, I'll be first in line to buy them! ~PJ Ausdenmore
