Tattoos. Unwed pregnancy. Giving up on shaving…showering…and employment. These used to be signatures of a trashy individual. Now they’re the new norm. What happened to etiquette, hygiene, and self restraint? Charlotte Hays, Southern gentlewoman extraordinaire, takes a humorous look at the spread of white trash culture to all levels of American society.

I read this book expecting lighthearted and accessible sociology. Instead, I got one woman's screed against everyone who is not exactly like her. The author states that anyone who does not know the words to a particular Protestant hymn is probably white trash. Really?? While she makes some valid points, they don't make up for her small-mindedness masquerading as Southern gentility. If you think we should return to the most repressive aspects of the 1950's, or you feel women are too weak to open a car door, this is the book for you. Otherwise, save your money.
