This is a great book to get children talking when they have experienced a death of someone close to them. My kids read it when their father died and it sparked a lot of conversation. Often no one talks to the kids and they don't know how to ask their questions. This gives them a chance to ask the hard questions.

Excellent for teaching young children about death and the emotions that go with it. Is a good idea though to purchase it before anyone close to them dies. It talks about not only family members and friends dying but pets also. Good for reading and then having a discussion with your child and answering their questions. My children are special needs and they still understood it very well.

Gentle, kind but never sugar-coated or dishonest. Friends bought this book when their grandfather was dying of cancer. In kid-friendly language and images it explains death without glossing over the difficulties and real pain. Good for preparing kids in general for the eventuality and especially helpful when faced with a loss close to home.

After reading other reviews, I have noticed that adults are making serious judgments about this book without regards to how children react to it. I am a mental health therapist who has used this book with a preschool grief and loss group. The kids LOVE this book. They request it over and over again. Obviously, I would never expose children to anything inappropriate or damaging. I do believe that children get something out of this book whether adults in their lives understand or not.

This book is a wonderful resource to use to help children understand death and dying. I am a social worker bereavement counselor for hospice and we use this book exclusively for our families.

My sons both love this book, it has helped them a great deal process the loss of my husband, their dad. I think adults have very different feelings about this book, but to a child t's great.

My mother had borrowed this from the school she worked at when my daughter's daddy passed away. Though very emotional at the time, I think it helped tremendously with not only having to tell her that he was 'gone', but helped her understand what it all meant in a non-scary way. I highly recommend to families with youngsters experiencing a loss.

I am a breavement counselor for a hospice organization. We use this book to help the kids deal with death. It is very factual and to the point, which is how your children will want you to answer their questions.

If you are looking for a way to help any child understand the life cycle or trying to talk about death, there are much better choices. The story line here is so abstract it is almost insulting to children. Surely when trying to teach our children something as sensitive as death, we can do better than use a dinosaur as our guide.

I was hunting a book to help a friend - to explain death to a child and to make her mother feel better about her loss - when I came to the page where a dinosaur was laying on the ground with the caption 'bang, bang you're dead' Wow - needless to say I shut the book and looked on for something else!
