As an Early Childhood Teacher who browses the book shelves in search of new titles, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this particular title! I remember my dad singing "When I First Came to This Land" on our road trip from Bagley, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington when I was six or seven. In a folksy manner, the rhythm and rhyme illustrate the real experiences of many pioneers. The importance of land, hard work, sense of humor and family created strong beginnings during the late 1880's. The retelling and playful illustrations bring out the best of my dad's intentions. I feel connected to my great, great grandparents and a part of the future when I sing this song to children!
