Evangeline Black plans to have an end-of-summer beach vacation and return to grad school at Ole Miss. However, there's one thing she wants to do first, and that involves a brief detour to the lovely old antebellum home where her late mother lived. Magic thrives in Gnome, Mississippi, and Evangeline becomes quickly entangled in the magic when she spontaneously shifts into a wolf only hours after arriving. Her life is out of control, and she has to rely on the kindness of strangers: the psychic caretaker, the sheriff who practices his own version of Native American-inspired magic, and a rocker werewolf. While she struggles at the bottom of the magical learning curve, it becomes apparent that someone is stalking her. Evangeline quickly learns two things about Gnome. The first is that anything is possible. The second is that magical creatures are much less enchanting when they want you dead. When in Gnome is a blend of fantasy, mystery, horror, and romance.
When in Gnome is the first book in the trilogy, Gnome Sweet Gnome, a magical series set against the rich backdrop of the Deep South.

I'll admit that the cover and title were the first things which attracted me to this book and, after reading the description, I really looked forward to reading it - and I wasn't disappointed! It is a definitely different start to an intriguing paranormal/fantasy trilogy. Evangeline Black was brought up by her loving adoptive parents but has been notified by an attorney that her biological mother has died and hinting at possessions that she has inherited. Not wanting to upset her adoptive parents, Evie uses a planned beach trip with friends to hide her side trip to Gnome to find out more about her mother. Gnome is nothing like she expected - and she finds out just why she has always felt 'different'. There are many different magical beings in Gnome - including, to her surprise, Evie. As she comes to terms with her own abilities, meets her father, has repeated attempts made on her life and discovers her inheritance she'll make new friends, new enemies and start to make a new life for herself in a new community. There's one thing for certain, life will never be the same for her again! I found this to be an enthralling page turner, one of those stories where the prowess of the author immerses the reader in the world they have created, making the characters and events feel believable. With the full range of heroes and villains, this is a great debut novel and I can't wait to read the sequels which complete the trilogy. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this to anyone who enjoys escaping into magical worlds with plenty of surprises along the way in a superbly entertaining fantasy romance. Thanks to Bewitching Book Tours for providing me with an e-copy of this novel for me to read in exchange for this honest review.
