Anyone who has a sense of curiosity and wonder for the natural world will surely enjoy reading this amazing collection of animal facts. The author, herself intrigued by the animal kingdom, has searched out some of the most interesting, funny, and even quirky tidbits of information, and she presents each fact in a fun and easy-to-read format. This book would make a perfect gift for the young nature scientist on anyone’s gift list. It would make a great reference for trivial pursuit kinds of games or short bedtime reading. And, for the child who likes to pepper his or her mom with “Did you know…”, these 365 facts will keep her entertained for weeks to come. In fact, this delightful book would be good choice for the kid in us all.

What a wonderful collection of true facts about the animal kingdom. It is an interesting little book, full of amazing oddities - perfect for children, but adults will love it, too. I can imagine a curious child, for example, sitting down and devouring it in one sitting, and I can also see readers picking through it at random, enjoying their “fun fact for the day,” as it were. It is a great book for kids who don’t like to read – they can just focus on the glorious curiosities presented. It will be a favourite for kids who do like to read – and they’ll want more. It’s for reluctant students and those with a keen scientific mind. It is for families to enjoy together. It should be on every homeschooling shelf and in every public school library. I have a suspicion that it will become a favourite in every household that owns it. I bought several copies and am giving them away as gifts. Commendations to author Sally Meadows for such a unique and engaging book!

“When Sleeping Birds Fly” is a book of unheard-of facts about all kinds of wildlife. Aimed for middle years kids, it also has great appeal for adults. Organized by chapters with names like Disguises, Deadly, Humongous, and Olympic Worthy, it lists 365 amazing facts. Yes, you could read one each day of the year but I can see this book being used for other activities such as entertainment in the car, or during a long wait. It would make a good guessing game or yes, even a bathroom reader. Some of the life forms mentioned could use a short explanation, such as the tardigrade (p. 103), but others are explained (the sifaka is a lemur, p. 108). If this book goes into a second printing, I would suggest an index in the back to aid in finding that one interesting fact you want to read again, listed by animal. On the whole, though, it’s a great resource for anyone with an interest in nature. Sally Meadows has done a lot of research for this book and deserves our applause.

If you’re not already fascinated by the animal kingdom, you will be once you’ve had a chance to peruse Sally Meadow’s collection of amazing facts in “When Sleeping Birds Fly.” I look forward to sharing this with my grandsons and discussing the way God made the animals like us in some ways, unlike us in others. I’m withholding one star because it would be much better with colored pictures instead of the same black and white drawing across the bottom of every page. Still, it’s a book you’ll want to keep and refer to again and again.

Who knew all these characteristics about animals designed by nature! This book is informative, surprising and enjoyable to read. For example, I’m sure many of us would like to have something like item 63, mothers will relate to item 165, items 92 and 230 wouldn’t go over well (!) in the human kingdom, and whaaaaaat for 350?
