The sunlit banks of the St. Andrews Bay in Parker, Florida is 7-year-old Carol Ann's playground - and the home of her ancestors for six generations. But on the day that World War II ends, Carol Ann realizes her idyllic life is marred by fears - and she sets out to change things. One by one - whether from her own doing or the hand of fate - she conquers her fears. Her terror of enemy soldiers is overcome when she unwittingly befriends a man she believes to be a German prisoner, escaped from nearby Tyndall Air Force Base. Similarly, and with childlike bumbling, she conquers her other fears as well. But when her father begins his road to alcoholism, Carol Ann realizes that while she was drawing lines and daring her fears to cross them, even worse dangers were sneaking up on her.
