This book contains informative essays about the history of African American dance, an interview with African American choreographers Donald McKayle and Ron Brown, and more than eighty pages of art photography and commentary, including an overview by art historian Samella Lewis. The historical essays cover, among other topics, the powerful influence of black dance on American dance (especially social dance) since the slavery period, racial politics in vaudeville during the Swing Era, and Step Dance on African American college campuses. These essays are illustrated with period photos, prints, and drawings from an exhibition by the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center.
