Mey does not intend the treatment to be a textbook, and so follows his narrative back and forth between linguistics and literary studies, does not cover such areas as irony and parody, and limits the literature to what he happened to be reading<-->Tolstoy and Woolf, Byatt and McInerny, Mary Wesley, and others.
