When We Met (Fool's Gold Series #13) by Susan Mallery

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery invites you back to Fool's Gold, where a newcomer to town might finally meet the man she never knew she needed…

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can't be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool's Gold, California, he's cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he's not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe-to-toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

It's no surprise I adore Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold novels. I discovered the series last year and have now read just about every novel in the series and to my utter delight am now part of her Review Crew! Due to the fact that I am reading her books prior to Marry Me at Christmas through the library there are times that I read the novels out of sequence. Which, due to the fact that the books can be read out of order or as stand alone books, is fine with me. Last night I finished When We Met; Which is the love story of Taryn Crawford, one of the partners of SCORE and Angel Whittaker, a former sniper and trainer of body guards. Can two people who believe that they can never fall in love, for two completely different reasons, find their happily ever after? Or will they discover that lightning never strikes twice? Sit back and enjoy, whether this is your first or fifty-first visit to Fool's Gold I believe you will be delighted.

Susan Mallery has created another fun adventure in Fool's Gold. This is Angel and Taryn's story. Angel is a bodyguard trainer and has a tragic past that haunts him. Taryn is a tough as nails PR woman also with a tragic past. Taryn helps Angel with his FWM troop and Angel helps her getting acclimated to camping for work. What starts out as a no commitment relationship turns into a love that scares them both. They must overcome their fears and realize the strength of their love.

This is the third one of the Fools Gold series I have read, each one gets better than the one before. This is one series that does not get old, the author keeps it fresh with new characters with day today lives. She brings outstanding humor in each book that will keep you smiling and laughing. I somehow expect it to get old but each book is different which keeps the series alive. Angel is a very strong alpha male who knows what he wants and known how to get it. His life has been hard and he has taken a few falls along the way. The one thing he can’t get over was losing his wife and son. He let them down, while he was away on a mission they died. He blames his self and will never let another women that close again. There is a strong pull to Taryn and he finds he can’t walk away, just a few nights to get her out of his system. He can out wait a saint if he wants it bad enough. He not looking for love but he wouldn’t mind a few nights with the lovely, strong well, bullheaded Taryn. By the time Angel works on Taryn and the mayor works on him he finds he might have bitten off a little more than he can chew. Taryn is a sarcastic women who tells it like it is, she doesn’t want to get close to anyone, as far as men go they are pretty far down her list. She is a strong minded wild cat of a women who dresses to the hilt. Oh a one nightstand isn’t so bad, she is the love them and leave them type. She has learnt her lessons the hard way and she learned them well. There is just something about Angel that just pulls her right in. She finds a one nightstand isn’t an easy thing to have not with a man like Angel. Both have baggage, both have to get over and work through issues before they can even think about each other. Can they both live and work in the small town of Fools Gold without dealing with each other or is this town to small for the both of them? I have totally enjoyed this story as I have all of the series I have read. It is light hearted humor that will keep you chuckling. There is a little mystery in each book with a few nutty people and good lord the mayor is something else. Each book in the series has lessons to learn, and wonderful people to meet. You will revisit each character in all the books which makes it feel like you are coming home. They are heartwarming and loving. Fools Gold is a town you would be proud to live in, and be part of. In this book we learn the lesson of trust, that we have no control over things that happen. We can’t stop the bad from happening but we need to move on, not forget just to learn to live again. This is a light read and not need to really forces. It is a fun loving read with a lot going on, you will want to keep turning the pages to get to the end which will give you a smile. I have not found one book of this series I have not enjoy, each one keeps you smiling and laughing with this authors wonderful sense of humor. I highly recommend this book to anyone who just needs a smile.

If you've been caught up in the world of "Fool's Gold", this one is a must read. Each character is someone you want for your best friend and living is Fool's Gold is a dream come true. Is it a little sappy? Sure. But, everyone needs a little sap in their life and we all need a little "happy ever after". When We Met is a sweet break from real life and Fool's Gold is where I want to spend my "happy ever after".

Susan Mallery does it again with book #13 of her Fool's Gold series! Her hero, Angel, is an ex Special OPS turned bodyguard & now runs a bodyguard school in Fool's Gold. He also has a scar on his neck from ear to ear, but he does have a gentle side. The heroine, Taryn, is always looks like a walking fashion page from Vogue. I know if I went to her home her extra bedroom would totally be her extra closet. Angel was given a troop of 7 year old girl, so Taryn help him with all things girlie, like French braid hair & mail polish. Taryn runs & co-owns the PR firm, Score, with 3 ex football stars & needs to go camping for a client, so Angel helps her with all things wilderness, like kayaking & hiking. So these 2 keep getting into hilarious situations with their role reversals. Ms. Mallery stills makes me hyperventilate from laughter & I just keep falling in love with all the new townsfolk & revisit with some old friends. I highly recommend any of the Fool's Gold series books & they can be read together or by themselves & earns my score of 4 fingers up & 8 toes! Thanks to my local library for this eBook.

Strong, accomplished, that's what both our hero and heroine are on the outside. But inside they are both tortured souls who need healing. It was a great read, watching them heal a little each day while traveling the road to happiness with each other.

When We Met was my first Susan Mallery novel and I don't know why I waited so long to pick up any of her books, especially her Fool's Gold series books. When I think of similar books, Jill Shalvis' Lucky Harbor series and Carly Phillips' Serendipity's Finest series comes to mind.  I liked When We Met. It was a slice of life kind of read--no mystery to solve, no crazy antics of a dead relative trying to play matchmaker from beyond the grave, etc. Just life in a small-town and it follows two people who were not looking to fall in love (but do), and their day-to-day jobs and friends. It was nice and relaxing to read it. I really enjoy small town romances and Fool's Gold was a great town to be in. It was great meeting the townspeople, like wily Mayor Marsha, the friendly women (who starred in their own novels in previous Fool's Gold books) who embraced Taryn and quickly took her into their fold, and the hardworking men (who didn't make as much of an impression as the women, at least in this novel). The focus of the story were Angel (our hero, whose name threw me off a little in the beginning) and Taryn (our very stylish heroine). Angel was a former military sniper and a widower who lost his wife and teenaged son in a car accident a few years ago. Taryn was new in town, after she and her business partners moved their PR business to Fool's Gold. Angel and Taryn started dating, though neither of them had any plans for anything serious. Angel still felt guilt over his wife and son's accident and Taryn, because she was abused by her alcoholic father when she was young, didn't feel she had it in her to fall in love.  Taryn and Angel were great, likable characters. I loved the scenes with Angel, Taryn and the FWM (Future Warriors of the Maa-zib--similar to Girl Scouts) girls. Angel wanted to volunteer in town and Mayor Marsha thought he'd be a great FWM Grove Keeper for the Acorns, which turned out to be a group of seven-year-old girls. Soon the big, scarred ex-Special Ops was learning to French braid with help from Taryn. The scenes with Angel, Taryn and the girls were so, so cute and brought a smile to my face. I really liked how Taryn and Angel's relationship progressed. They were older (mid- to late thirties) and they were established in their careers and they had a calmness about them that I really liked. It wasn't all fire and drama and shenanigans that I'm used to with younger characters (new adult novels I'm looking at you) in other contemporary romances that I've been reading lately, but it doesn't lack for chemistry and heat. I was pleasantly surprised that the sex scenes were pretty steamy--I had it in my head that sex scenes in Susan Mallery's books are written in a way where much is left to the reader's imagination but it's actually more like a Nora Roberts or a Cathy Maxwell. After reading When We Met, I am definitely going to be picking up more of the Fool's Gold books. I'm especially really excited for the follow-up books to this one because they will feature Taryn's ex-football player business partners--all three made an impression in this novel. When We Met was a sweet, light, romantic contemporary read that took me away from reality for a little while. Read When We Met if you need a romantic pick-me-up on a lazy weekend or bring it to the beach with you--it's a good summer read. (Originally posted on Michelle & Leslie's Book Picks book blog.)
