Overview

You can find hope and peace--no matter what

The storms of life visit us all, and at times we find ourselves ill-prepared to weather them. Where is God when everything comes crashing down? Where is he when a job is lost? When a child goes astray? When the diagnosis is cancer? Does he even care?

In When You Can't Find God, Linda Evans Shepherd teaches you how to see God in any circumstance, even when it's hard. With compassion born from her own experiences with tragedy, Shepherd offers you practical strategies for surviving difficult times, giving your troubles to God, praying through the pain, and finding peace, hope, and joy once more. She also shows you how to use the tough times as a tool to draw nearer to God.

No one is exempt from pain and trials. But there is always hope.

"Everybody looks for God and wants to be in his presence whether we admit it or not. We search and search, trying to find God, only to discover that we are looking in the wrong places. If you're going through tough circumstances and need hope for the journey, this book can help you find God, fasten your heart to him, and focus on the fact that he was there all the time."--Thelma Wells, MMin, DD (Hon.), president, A Woman of God Ministries; speaker; author; professor; mentor

"God will take care of you." "Just trust Him." "He's got you in His hands." "God never closes a door but He opens a window." "He's got something better for you--wait and see." These statements carry varying degrees of truth. But all are pat answers--trite statements that lose their meaning because we use them so often. As a mother whose now-adult daughter suffered severe brain damage in a car accident more than twenty years ago, Linda Shepherd could write the book on pat answers. I'm thankful she didn't. Her new release, WHEN YOU CAN'T FIND GOD: HOW TO IGNITE THE POWER OF HIS PRESENCE (Revell, 2011) explores the mystery of experiencing the holy in the hurt. The book combines biblical, practical teaching with powerful, personal stories that help draw readers toward God. Highlighted callouts and chapter-ending features including "Oasis" (a Psalm or other avenue for finding and resting in God) and "Prayer Experience" (the author's own prayer to pray or adapt) point readers to the Father. When I'm hurting, I need a friend--not an expert. When I'm confused, I need truth--not the enemy's lies. When I'm in pain, I need a healing dose of Holy Spirit power--not pat answers or pious platitudes. WHEN YOU CAN'T FIND GOD, with its warm, compassionate tone, contains all three. Read it and receive an inoculation against pat answers. Embrace it and allow the Truth to set you free.

Linda Evans Shepherd in her new book, "When You Can't Find God" published by Revell teaches us How to Ignite the Power of His Presence. Suppose you walked into work and they told you to go back home that they were downsizing immediately and let you go. Suppose that you were given the news that your daughter, just coming home from college, was in a multi car collision and was killed. Suppose that your son was beaten up by a gang and is in serious condition at the hospital with the doctors not having hope for his recovery. What do you do on the day that the darkness seems to close in and win? You go looking and can't seem to find where is God. Linda Evans Shepherd knows about those days, that stretch on for weeks, months and even years. How do we deal with this? In "When You Can't Find God" Ms. Shepherd gives us chapters on "Finding God in your circumstances", "Five Keys to surviving difficult times", Giving Your Troubles To God", "Praying Against The Spirit Of Strife" (everyone needs to read this chapter) and a few other chapters on what to pray for. Each chapter ends with a "trip to the oasis" a psalm reading and then a "Prayer Experience". The end of the book has a bible study and discussion guide that is just wonderful to go through for a small group or individual study. This is a book for the thirsty traveler in a very hot desert. Refreshing! If you would like to listen to interviews with other authors and professionals please go to Kingdom Highlights where they are available On Demand. I don't think there is a person alive who has not struggled with "finding God" through times of difficult circumstances, or wondering if He even cares. If you are one of those people, Linda's book will help you walk through your pain and awaken you to an understanding of God's tremendous love and purpose for your life. Your problems may not go away, but you will face them with renewed hope and joy. This is a book of substance, NOT pages of feel-good "fluff".

Scripture tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 'When You Can't Find God' ensures the reader that in their darkest hour, God is there. The author's shared experiences encourage and bring to the forefront that no one is without challenges. Yet, it is those challenges that when we search, trust and believe, we will find that God has been where he's always been, hold us in His arms.
