Reviewed by Cathy Hudson for Readers' Favorite Steve and Melody think they have found the home of their dreams in Hope House. Little do they know, the house has some horrific secrets and a thirst for some new blood. I have read and enjoyed Michael Bray's work prior to picking this book to review. I enjoy his style of writing and the subject of this book had me intrigued. Admittedly, it was a very slow burn to begin with. It followed the traditional scene that is typical of a lot of 'haunted house' type stories (ie: young couple buy a beautiful, secluded house...etc). I persevered with it and was pleasantly surprised to find that it took on a very unique spin. We have all the trappings of a very effective horror novel in this book with a creepy paranormal element, as well as the gory events occurring with the resident nutcase. Something for every horror fan! Michael Bray's writing is reminiscent of James Herbert. Intelligent and descriptive, without unnecessary rambling. The characters we encounter are colourful and very life-like, with believable reactions to the events unfolding, which is very important to me. The ending is fast paced and breath-taking, in complete contrast to the slow build at the beginning. My only criticism, and it's only a small one, is that I can't figure out where in the world this novel is set. I find this with a lot of British Indie writers, not a massive gripe and it's still a fantastic book!
