"Who Could That Be at This Hour?" Free Preview Edition (The First 4 Chapters) by Lemony Snicket, Seth

Before the Baudelaires became orphans, before he encountered A Series of Unfortunate Events, even before the invention of Netflix, Lemony Snicket was a boy discovering the mysteries of the world.
In a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted, a young Lemony Snicket began his apprenticeship in an organization nobody knows about. He started by asking questions that shouldn't have been on his mind. Now he has written an account that should not be published, in four volumes that shouldn't be read. This is the first volume.

When I saw this book preview I cried. I was so thrilled. At the time I was bedridden with pnemonia, and my laughter faded in to rough coughs that triggered a violent ashma attack, but nevertheless I cried and did my best to sing a happy song. All of you people who post here and there and everywhere are so heartless in regards to the author, Mr. Lemony Snicket, who if he is who he says he is, has devoted his life to something noble and has experienced a miserable time for it. Smartly written, this series will be a brilliant addition to Mr. Snicket's charismatic work. Read it, all of you, and put down the thirty nine clues forever! Sincerly, Hope Lost

I love Lemony, but this book was not one of his best. The beginning was fabulous, but the middle and end were shaky and jumped from topic to topic. I have read every one of A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I LOVED LOVED LOVED those, so I expected a bit more out of this book. However, this book was pretty amazing, and if you are a Very Funny Dude, this book is good for you!!

Reviewed by Karen Pirnot for Readers Favorite Lemony Snicket has trained in a very special place to be a very special person. In "Who Could That Be at This Hour" by Lemony Snicket, Snicket has chosen a bottom-of-the-line mentor so that he can pretty much do his own investigative thing. In order to be a good investigator, you must of course be able to ask appropriate questions. However, Lemony Snicket consistently asks the wrong questions, leaving it next to impossible that he will effectively and efficiently solve the mystery of the missing Bombinating Beast, a statue that is desired by many, but highly elusive to most. The setting for this mystery is in a seaside town that has been drained of the sea, leaving a seaweed forest and a slowly disappearing ink industry. There are a lot of hidden messages in this book and I have my doubts whether younger readers will be able to tease them out. At times, the clues are confusing and without highly abstract abilities, the child may not follow what has been teased out by Lemony so that his mystery can be solved. The character himself is absolutely loveable in his honesty about himself. The other main characters are equally appealing in their evil and their flaws. At times, the reader is asking whether evil or stupidity is the major flaw in human nature. All in all, those in middle school will probably keep the pages turning while grade school readers will be asking lots of questions.

If you are expecting a children’s book, this may or may not be the book for you.  It is certainly age-appropriate for a nine-year-old.  It is also an expertly crafted spoof of noir fiction, complete with Duke Ellington references.
