Overview

Follow the amazing journey of Pope Francis, whose warmth and humility have made him beloved around the world.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, aka Pope Francis, from Argentina, is the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first from the Southern Hemisphere. Since being elected pope he has shown a humbler, less formal approach to his office than his predecessors: a warm style that has been referred to as "no frills." His common touch and accessibility, as well as his insistence that the church  be more open and welcoming, has quickly endeared him not only to Roman Catholics but to millions of others around the world.

This title in the New York Times best-selling series includes eighty illustrations that help bring Pope Francis's amazing story to life.

I am the mother of an 8-year-old boy who’s enrolled in CCD at our local Catholic Church. After reading “Who Is Pope Francis?” with him, I can’t say enough good things about this well-written biography. In direct, easy-to-follow language, Stephanie Spinner beautifully captures Pope Francis’ full life in all its humanness. Every time my son had a question, she would intuitively answer it in the next sentence or paragraph and sometimes include an in-depth explanation. For instance, my son wondered why Jorge Mario Bergoglio changed his name to Pope Francis. In the following two pages, she went into depth about Saint Francis of Assisi and why he chose to honor him by taking on his name. What I appreciate the most about this book is how the author covers many of the major social and political issues in Argentina. She also writes about some of the key challenges and reform issues within the Catholic Church itself. Ms. Spinner doesn’t omit any of the facts that would otherwise paint a false and rosy picture of the world our children are growing up in. However, she writes about them in an age appropriate way. Because of this book, my son and I had quite a few healthy discussions about some pretty serious topics. As a parent, I am relieved that I got to explain them first to my son without peers or other outside influences getting to him before me. “Mommy, I want to meet Pope Francis!” is what my son said after he finished reading the last page aloud to me. I foresee a family trip to Vatican City in the future.
