Published biennially since 1967, this source presents basic data on Americans "currently participating in politics at a local, state or national level" or who "have been active politically in the recent past." This edition, with 2,777 new biographies, chronicles more than 27,000 individuals. Coverage reflects the 1992 elections
Profiled are all executive branch officials (including subcabinet), ambassadors, other key appointees, members of Congress (and their administrative assistants), governors and other state elected officials, national and state party chairs, and mayors of cities with at least 50,000 population. Also included are people described as "those of influence behind-the-scenes.
Entries include the usual who's who-type personal information, party affiliations, government offices, business positions, religious affiliation, and memberships. The organization of this edition mirrors that of previous ones. Both volumes start with a list of major executive branch officials, members of Congress, judges, governors, and state party chairs. The bulk of both volumes consists of state-by-state sections with the profiles in alphabetical order by name under each state. An index of names is provided at the end of volume 2. It is necessary to use this index, since it is not always possible to guess where an entry will be found. Hillary Rodham Clinton, for instance, is listed under the District of Columbia, while her husband is under Arkansas
The strength of this source is comprehensiveness, not depth. The Bill Clinton entry is no longer than, for example, that of Herbert Adams, a state representative from Lewiston, Maine. The entire entry for Ross Perot is as follows: "Polit & Govt Pos: US Presidential cand, 92," followed by his mailing address
Most of the federal officials here are also covered in "Who's Who in America", and some of the state elected officials are in the regional volumes ("Who's Who in the East", etc.), but the strength of this set is that it provides information on Americans involved in government at the state and local level who are not found elsewhere.
**** Previous editions of this biennial biographical directory of Americans who are active in politics are cited in BCL3 and Sheehy. The 14th edition chronicles the lives of 27,252 politically active men and women, and lists the biographies of 2,777 entrants for the first time. Coverage of the directory reflects the results of the 1992 election, and includes elected officials, appointees, political party officials, and behind-the-scenes influentials, at the national, state, county, and municipal (for cities with populations of over 50,000) levels.
