Overview

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling

From the author of the beloved New York Times bestselling book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and the creator and star of The Mindy Project comes a collection of essays that are as hilarious and insightful as they are deeply personal.

In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you.

In “How to Look Spectacular: A Starlet’s Confessions,” Kaling gives her tongue-in-cheek secrets for surefire on-camera beauty, (“Your natural hair color may be appropriate for your skin tone, but this isn’t the land of appropriate–this is Hollywood, baby. Out here, a dark-skinned woman’s traditional hair color is honey blonde.”) “Player” tells the story of Kaling being seduced and dumped by a female friend in L.A. (“I had been replaced by a younger model. And now they had matching bangs.”) In “Unlikely Leading Lady,” she muses on America’s fixation with the weight of actresses, (“Most women we see onscreen are either so thin that they’re walking clavicles or so huge that their only scenes involve them breaking furniture.”) And in “Soup Snakes,” Kaling spills some secrets on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and close friend, B.J. Novak (“I will freely admit: my relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell.”)

Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who’s ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to. And those who’ve never been at a turning point can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.

One evening last year, I was onstage at a Q&A in Manhattan hosted by a magazine to discuss my life and career. This was one of those fancy events where ticket prices are high, and there’s wine and cheese beforehand, and cocktails, but no real meal is served at any point. It made you wish you had just shushed the naysayers and brought three hot little sliders in your clutch to nibble at opportune moments. No one else seemed to mind the lack of food, though, because the theater was packed, primarily with an older, mostly white crowd.

It's kind of annoying that people who are having technical problems are bringing the book ratings down. Go to B&N's customer service! Love Mindy Kaling's work! She's awesome! :-)

Really enjoyed it from cover to cover.

It's a bummer that so many peoplehave given this book such poor reviews because of issues withthe program itself, and nothing to do with the actual content. I enjoyed Mindy's second book - she weaves her sassy, sarcastic wit with some down-to-earth truisms and advice. Her humorous and chatty voice makes it feel like she is dishing to you as an old friend, and combined with her funny anecdotes, this a quick read. While I would probably give her first book 5 stars, I give this one 4 because of its brevity. I felt that it lacked a certain depth that the first book had.

I am a huge fan of Kaling's work! I usually don't leave reviews, but the current two and a half star rating is not accurate. Sorry it didn't work with your reader, but that isn't an accurate review of the book. Kaling provides us another honest glimpse into her life and experiences with hilarity. While I love her first book more, I feel honored to have read her second and hopes she contines to write more! Recommended to females (and gay men, as she says herself) who enjoy honest, real life comedy!

I’ve been a fan of Mindy Kaling for quite some time. I read her first book and I was very excited when this book came out. I was not disappointed. The book is not a memoir but a collection of essays that were very truthful, humorous, and insightful. There were several moments that made me literally laugh out loud. I also thoroughly enjoyed the placement of the last chapter/book what explained the title of the book. It was a great note to end on.

Buy it on Amazon. Great book. Nook Book however will freeze and not let you advance beyond a certain point. DO NOT BUY THE NOOK EBOOK. I had a horrible experience with Barnes and Noble customer service and ended up buying the ebook on amazon instead and reading the book on my phone. The book is hilarious and in my opinion even better than her first book. Highly recommend the book in paperback or through a different ebook distributer.

I can't turn past page 95.....so very frustrating. It looks like I'm not the only one based on the reviews. I'm reading it on a Nook app...ipad. So far I'm enjoying the book so I'll give it a 4 star but I need to be able to read it before I have a true opinion.....it isn't the authors fault, there is something wrong with the ebook.

I've been looking forward to reading this book, but the ebook is not working properly. I tried both my Nook device and via the app on my phone, both will crash with an attempt to open this book. :( do not buy the digital copy!

Guys. I LOVE Mindy Kaling. I don't really pay much attention to celebrities and whatnot, but if there was one I was obsessed with, it would be Mindy. I've actually never seen The Office (don't hate me) and I've only seen a couple seasons of The Mindy Project, but it's just Mindy herself that I love. This book was hilarious, in Mindy's signature way, and I loved every bit of it. I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud this much at a book. I think I may have even liked this one more than her first book, which is saying something. This book was just so... real. Mindy (we/re on first name basis duh) isn't afraid to say what she's thinking, I loved getting an inside peek at her life, from her day to her relationships (romantic and friends), to behind the scenes on The Office and The Mindy Project. But she also has a few serious essays, like the one on body image, and female friendship. I'm not sure I can even pick a favorite essay. There's the transcript of her Harvard speech, which if you haven't seen yet, you NEED to (so worth it. You'll thank me). There was also a scene from the alternate life she imagines fro herself that had me dying of laughter. I could gush on for hours, but this book seemed to encompass everything love about Mindy--funny, confident, poised, frank, honest. I loved this book, and I think you will too

Let me preface this review by saying that I freely admit that I was probably born without a funny bone or at least one that is so deeply buried as not to understand wildly-laughed at humorous things. I will also admit that I have never watched The Office (I never found it funny.) or The Mindy Project. So why did I chose to listen to Why Not Me?? Well, the little I know about Mindy—a successful, self-assured woman in Hollywood—I admire and I was hoping to learn a little bit more about her and her success. There were bits within Why Not Me? I really enjoyed. I loved the Hollywood secrets/confessions portion of the novel. I found myself laughing out loud at Kaling’s revelations. It dispelled that myth that being an actress is the “easy life.” Maybe it is an easier life than some, but it is not the easiest life out there. As the book progressed, I started to get lost and a little bored with the essays. The section of the novel where she shares her alternate dream life of being a teacher at a stuffy prep school didn’t seem to translate well to audio as it was told mainly through email exchanges. (Imagine the same email signature being read over and over again.) Kaling’s voice started to grate on me the more bored I got and I couldn’t wait for everything to wrap up. Perhaps this novel wasn’t a good selection on my part because I have not followed Kaling’s career and her brand of humor. So this memoir might be a good fit for someone more familiar with her work than I am.

“Work hard, know your s**t, show your s**t, and then feel entitled. Listen to no one except the two smartest and kindest adults you know, and that doesn't always mean your parents. If you do that, you will be fine.” Genre: Humorous Memoir. Number of Pages: 228. Perspective: First. Location: New York and California. This book is a collection of essays/short stories that range from Mindy’s experiences on The Office and The Mindy Project to other random events from her adult life. [Thank God. I don’t need anymore celebrity childhood stories.] There was even one chapter that was a series of made-up emails between her and coworkers if she had ended up as a high school teacher. This was the best part of the whole book! I actually laughed out loud in my work kitchen during my lunch break. If you’ve ever read any of my other reviews of memoirs, you probably know that I hate memoirs. The non-linear and disorganized nature of them irritates me. And, quite frankly, I don’t care enough about most celebrities to read 300+ pages about their lives. So why do I keep reading them? Because I hoped that one day I would find a truly enjoyable memoir. Well, that day has finally come! I love Mindy as an actress and now I love her as a writer. She is bubbly, but honest. She is truly funny, even in writing, which I think is extremely challenging to do. There was not one part of this book that I didn’t enjoy. It was short, but that was perfect! As stated above, most memoirs are WAY too long and lose my interest after the first hundred pages or so. The length of this book was just enough to give me a few days of humor and an easy read, but it was not long enough to feel like a chore to finish.
