Wicked Women: Notorious, Mischievous, and Wayward Ladies from the Old West isn't about your usual Western woman's pilgrimage across the plains: it's a randy, rowdy survey of less-well-behaved female outlaws, gamblers, and other wicked women, and it provides a lively alternative to the usual focus on pioneer homemakers.   During the late nineteenth century, while men were settling the frontier, such women led 'wicked' lives when they followed fortune seekers. Their stories have been widely scattered under various headings, so it's refreshing to find a collection of short, action-packed stories of the Old West here, offering biographical sketches paired with Western history and spiced with insights on purposes and people.   Speaking of 'spice', fun black and white vintage photos and illustrations from the author's own historic collection of images and historical libraries enhances the value and appeal of her coverage, making it a recommendation for collections ranging from women's history and issues to Western frontier sagas.

“Wicked Women” is a fun read that also includes a wealth of little-known history.  It’s obviously well-researched and written from a point of love of the wild west.  The stories feature a wide variety of women whose stories will have you laughing and horrified, sometimes both at the same time. I definitely recommend “Wicked Women” for anyone with an interest in women’s history, the wild west, or even history in general.  It’s an easy read that can appeal to anyone. Chriss Enss has put together a spectular collection of  colorful, powerful, and debauched bad girls who romped, gambled, whored, robbed, and shot their way through life in America's old west. I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed reading this book. Complete with pictures, each woman's story is told with a startling, fresh, to-the-point prose. Mincing no words, the colorful life of each woman is brilliantly portrayed. What truly impressed me is the amount of research and digging the author had to do to uncover details and facts of the lives portrayed. Loved, loved, loved this book. It's one that I will always keep on my favourites bookshelf.
