Editorial Reviews

Centuries ago, the Devourers came and attempted to destroy all humankind, but were defeated only because of those able to evoke animal spirits. Now these relentless would-be conquerors are back and the future of the planet rests on the slender shoulders of Meilin, Connor, Rollan, and Abeke, four 11-year-olds who can channel the wolf, leopard, panda, and falcon that can save the world. (P.S. This novel by Fablehaven author Brandon Mull marks the takeoff of a multiple-author book series and a role-playing game. Volume 2 will see the light in January with a new fiction by Maggie Stiefvater.)

Publishers Weekly
Mull (the Beyonders books) kicks off the multiplatform Spirit Animals series with an exciting first installment (volume two arrives in January 2014, written by Maggie Stiefvater). In the world of Erdas, 11-year-olds must all drink the Nectar to see if they have the rare ability to summon a spirit animal. Greencloaks, those with spirit animals, are an important order that helped defeat the Devourer hundreds of years ago, with help from four Great Beasts who gave their lives to protect Erdas. Now, there are signs that the Devourer may return; meanwhile, four children from around the world shock themselves and those around them when they summon the four Fallen Beasts. Mull carves out each distinct hero in spare prose that moves the story quickly forward (along with several animal- and superpower-driven action sequences) as Meilin, Connor, Rollan, and Abeke forge relationships with their spirit animals and decide where they stand in the imminent war. Readers eager to spend more time in Erdas (and find their own spirit animals) can do so in an online game that ties into the series. Ages 8–12. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
Book 1 of the "Spirit Animals" series introduces readers to the world of Erdas which is facing great danger. When children reach the age of eleven, they are given the ritual drink of the Nectar of Ninani. Some will call spirit animals which will give them special strengths or powers. In this year of impending danger, four unlikely children in different parts of Erdas bring forth special spirit animals, former Great Ones who fell during the last major battle. Conor, the son of a shepherd, is servant to the earl's son, who is expected to bring forth a spirit animal at the town ceremony. However, Conor surprises himself and everyone else when his spirit animal appears. He has bonded with Briggan, the great wolf. Abeke is constantly trying to prove to her family and her village that she is strong. For her birthday, she hunts and kills an antelope for food but is told that her act was disrespectful. She gains respect when she bonds with the leopard Uraza. Rollan, an orphan who must steal food to survive, is in prison when he bonds with Essix, the falcon. Meilin, trained in martial arts, is forced to leave her father to fight off invaders when she bonds with the panda Jhi. Unsure of themselves and whom to trust, the four young people are thrust into a major conflict to save Erdas. This first book in the series introduces them to the reader and to each other as they struggle to find their place in the world. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson

Gr 4–7—In the world of Erdas, when children turn 11, they drink Nectar in order to see if they will have a spirit animal. Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan are chosen, and, with their spirit animals-a wolf, a leopard, a panda, and a falcon-they must summon the Four Fallen, Great Beasts that gave their lives many years earlier to defeat the Devourer. Now the Devourer is back, and the children have to use their animal powers to defeat it. Minions of the Devourer are hot on their trail and will do anything to stop them from succeeding. This story has a well-developed plot and likable, well-rounded characters. Mull masterfully draws readers into Erdas with his fast-paced scenes. His writing is smooth and easily transitions between characters' points of view without causing confusion. Fans of Mull's Fablehaven (S & S, 2007), Peter Lerangis's The Colossus Rises (HarperCollins, 2013), or other page-turning fantasy adventures will have a hard time putting this book down.—Kira Moody, Whitmore Public Library, Salt Lake City, UT
Kirkus Reviews
The appearance of the Four Fallen Great Beasts in Erdas signals the re-emergence of an evil power long forgotten. In the tradition of Erdas, four 11-year-olds are given Nectar, a substance designed to help them call their spirit animals. Conor, an indentured servant, calls Briggan the wolf. Uraza the leopard answers the call of the young warrior, Abeke. Jhi the panda comes to Meilin, the daughter of a Zhongese general. Rollan, a poor street urchin, calls Essix the falcon. With the assistance of the Greencloaks, a powerful but secretive order, the four must learn to bond with their spirit animals, drawing strength and wisdom from their gifts. Their mission is to retrieve the talismans from the other Great Beasts before the Devourer can regain power and destroy the world. Constructed in the tradition of The 39 Clues, this fast-paced new series will be penned by various well-known authors. Unfortunately, flat characters and a predictable plot are evidence that this first installment lacks Mull's usual creativity and humor. A companion website promising a multimedia experience invites readers to be paired with their own spirit animals. Should satisfy readers hungry for a new fantasy series. (Fantasy. 8-12)

It was the day that Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan turned 11. Four kids from lands far apart from each other all turning 11 on the same day. Not really a big deal right? Wrong! When a child turns 11 in the world of Erdas they get a chance to summon a spirit animal. If they are meant to have a spirit animal, it comes out of nowhere and forms a bond with the child forever. The bond gives the child and animal great powers. These four kids summon the great legendary animals that were killed in battle – Briggan the Wolf, Uraza the Leopard, Jhi the Panda and Essix the Falcon. Together the four children and their Spirit Animals must stop the evil Devourer from destroying Erdas before it is too late! When I first read about this new series by Scholastic I thought, “Okay so they are making another 39 Clues type series” (series of books written by different authors). When I read further I saw it was Brandon Mull (author of the Fablehaven and The Beyonders series) who was writing the first book (that got my interest). Brandon Mull is a great fantasy author. The books of his I’ve read gets me totally involved in the story. The Spirit Animals series is a fantasy series and Mr. Mull’s book in the series was the perfect start. I love his style of adding a bit of humor (like Conor is a sheep-herder and his Spirit Animal is a wolf – HA!) to a whole lot of action. The world of Erdas is described well and I liked learning about the new characters and their Spirit Animals. Conor was my favorite character in this book. I think fans of The 39 Clues and fantasy books will love Wild Born, Book 1 of Spirit Animals! *NOTE* I got an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I liked the book and and I liked the plot. It had a very good ending. My only problem was that it was kind of short. But it was meant to be short because scholastic based series like spirit animals, the 39 clues, and infinity ring are made to be pretty quick reads with a good plot and a great story line. I advise peaple who have not read the story to not read any further because the rest of the review has a few spoilers in it. If you noticed the kids are mature for their age even though they are only eleven and some of them almost twelve years old. Like Meilin is a good fighter and she is strong, serious, and warlike. Conner is hardworking and he is loyal, kind and would do anything for his family. Abeke pronounced as( ab-eh-kay believe me I know because my family is african american) is athletic, fast, and a good companion. Rollan is goofy, but he can be serious when needed,he helps when there is tension in the group. If you notice there spirit animals are based on what they need to be. Like Meilin's spirit animal Jhi is calm and takes the time to think and use wisdom and strategy unlike Meilin who rushes into things and acts mainly on emotion even though she is clever. Conner is shy and unsure of hiself even though he has the potential to be a leader. While Briggan his spirit animal is more confident and does what has to be done on leaderly instinct. Abeke has self doubt and doesn't always trust her own abilities. While Uraza is calm and cool and is always sure of her abilities. Rollan like Meilin can be too hot headed and relies mainly on his emotion and thinks things through even less then Meilin. Their spirit animals balence them out and are what their human friends are meant to become. Written by blacksparrow87 a kid that loves to read

Title: Spirit Animal Book 1 - Wild Born Author: Brandon Mull Published: 9-10-13 Publisher: Scholastic Inc. Pages: 217 Genre: Children's Fiction Sub Genre: Action & Adventure; Animals; Fantasy & Magic ISBN: 9780545522434 ASIN: B00C2YWISY Reviewer: DelAnne Reviewed For: NetGalley My Rating: 5 Stars . At the age of 11, Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan are among all the eleven year old children of Erdas who are gathered for the ceremony that would determine if any among them are connected to a spirit animal. A rare circumstance but considered a blessing and a destiny. After drinking the brew they are all given there are four flashes of light, from which emerge, Briggan a wolf, Uraza a leopard, Jhi a panda and Essix a falcon. The four most powerful legendary spirit animals ever known. They are the ones form history who sacrificed everything to save the people, animals and land from evil. Now Evil has returned in the form of Destroyer and his followers. Now the four, strangers to each other must learn how to connect with their spirit animals, control the powers they have been given by them and work together to find the talismans and stay alive and ahead of those who pursue them. A wonderful new series that takes its readers on a journey through fantasy and invites them to join in the search for a way to defeat a powerful evil and find their own animal spirit. Each book is written by a different author, but each continues where the previous one leaves off. Book one takes place in Erdas, a mythical land with a rich history and mystic ways. The first part of the book lays the ground work for the series, and explain the character's personalities and histories. Once this is completed , the story takes off and moves quickly into the action and adventure. A clever story basis that will grab the readers and have them begging for more. My rating is 5 out of stars.
