“This epic fantasy romance is a strong debut!”— RT Book Reviews

Anna was born of Chevring, a territory renowned for its valorous war horses, in the kingdom of Aurelia. But peace reigns, and her family’s fortune has dwindled. Her father brokers an alliance with the wealthy Lord Roger of Stolweg. The price: his eldest daughter and the secrets to her family’s once great power. Soon after they are wed, Roger proves himself cruel and calculating, a harsh lord who sows the seeds of fear in his people.

He has an ambitious secret, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his new bride, nor his older brother, heir to all that he covets. But secrets have a way of getting out, and the people of Stolweg quietly bide their time, coming to love Anna for her noble bravery in standing up to her scoundrel husband. She will prove the leader they need to rise up and bring their underground resistance to flourish.

But it is Larkin, a guard of Aurelia, whose presence brings Roger’s treachery to the forefront, igniting the spark of war. Larkin comes to Stolweg to investigate Roger for treason against the realm and ends up giving all of his attention to Anna. For she not only captures his heart, she may be the only person who can stop the battle that will tear the kingdom apart.

Lady Aubrianne, Anna to her family, is an enchanting character. Her life has been spent with the most beautiful and strongest destrier horses known in the kingdom. She is a very accomplished horse woman. Lord Roger of Stolweg is her betrothed, a deal struck between Lord Roger and her father, to relieve the crushing debt Chevring had been under in times of peace. Not many war horses were needed during this time. So Anna sets of to go to her betrothed. The marriage will take place at Stolweg. Lord Roger is kind on the journey, if aloof. Anna can not make out his character. Though she does try, he seems to be a hard man to know. After they are married, she finds out what kind of man he truly is. He is cruel to his people and even more cruel to Anna. She is stuck. The vows have been made and consummated, if that is what you can call what Lord Roger does to her. Anna does her best to care for the people of Stolweg. They industry in her a kind mistress and a wonderful medicine woman. She gets on the best she can and cares for the horses she has brought and bred. She gives her husband a wide berth. Someone from Anna's past is coming to see Lord Roger, though none of them know It yet. Lord Roger holds a secret that no one would have guessed. But Anna has a secret of her own. A lineage thought long gone. I was astonished to find that this book is a debut. The writing was so well done that I was sure to find other books previously published to add to my collection. I enjoyed the relationships between Anna and her staff. Though she didn't treat them like staff. More like family. Lord Roger was very easy to loathe. And the hero was truly that. A perfect man, with his flaws, but exactly what a good heroine needs! I absolutely will look for the next book by this author! Her turn of phrase speaks of a highly engaged author. I Cann only imagine how wonderful the next book will be. *I received a courtesy of this title*
