Overview

Prim mid-western schoolteacher Lora Harding is in for the summer vacation of her life when darkly handsome American Max Maxwell slides into her rented car in steamy Cancun, Mexico and orders her to "drive" at gunpoint. Max and his men break Americans out of Mexican jails for a living, but his latest job has gone horribly wrong and Max is on the run for his life. Kidnapping Lora, Max takes her on a heart-stopping adventure as he races to rejoin his men and get out of the country before the authorities can catch up to him. Feisty Lora fights him every step of the way, and in the midst of saving each other's lives the two fall madly in love in this blistering novel of romantic suspense by the "mistress of sizzling sensuality" (Romantic Times).

About the Author

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to write. My first book was a ten-page effort written at age five for my grandmother. Throughout grade school, high school and college I wrote for various school publications. When I was eighteen, my first professionally published piece—a humorous anecdote—appeared in Reader’s Digest. Still, it never occurred to me that I might become a professional writer. I aimed for a career as a lawyer and was actually in law school when I sold my first book. When that happened, the world lost a would-be lawyer and gained a writer. That book, which is still in print, is Island Flame, and it was published when I was twenty-four. Since then, I’ve written over forty books, which regularly appear on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller lists, among others. The mother of three sons, I read, I write, and I chauffeur children. That’s my life.

COULDNT PUT IT DOWN

I don't see that it makes a difference that the recently concluded war was in Vietnam instead of Afghanistan and there are no cell phones in sight. There are some distracting typos but her writing is generally good and the plot hangs together well.

This book is listed as having a 2012 publication date yet has been in the Romantic Times best 200 list since 1980. How many people are being conned into thinking this is a new book?

Mystery Intrigue Action Daring-Liaison The first description that comes to mind is “Thriller”…second is “Sensual”.  The situations keep you riveted wanting to know more… “How is she/he/them going to get out of this!  Lots of scheming diversity.  Oh yeah, and lot of apprehension!

This hero had a lot of baggage, and I guess we¿re supposed to excuse his mean attitude (which doesn¿t improve much over the course of the story), out of sympathy for him. It doesn¿t work. The writer does keep you on the edge with the story line itself. I just prefer a hero, with or without past ghosts, to still be portrayed in a better light. He could have been abrupt and still have had a conscience. After the second time he calls the heroine a b---h, I knew what I was in for. It was as if we¿re never supposed to like him. And there were many ¿emotion¿ repetitions. Like ¿I wish I had a penny for every time he said¿¿ This was an interesting story, but I did contemplate putting it down for something that makes you feel good. It¿s definitely not a keeper.

Do yourself a favor and read this fantastic book. A very fast-paced plot, two incredible lovers, good story theme, and very intriguing. Karen Robards always knows how to capture her audiences. It's a must- read.

WO is a road/cabin romance that starts out in Cancun, Mexico when Lora is carjacked by Max. I normally love an alpha hero but this guy is an alpha jerk. Way over the top jerk too. He scares her to death when he jumps in her car with his face hidden by a sombrero, kidnaps her and manhandles her when she tries to escape, but the worst part is his repeated threats of rape! You know, I could almost forgive him if he could have groveled or even apologized because he does not actually physically abuse her. But, no! No apologies, no groveling. Heroine is no wimp either, she's a fighter and insists on staying with him when their lives are in danger. So I never understood why she is SOOO hot for him even while he is bullying her or threatening her with rape. I did not fall for that crap. Well, WO warmed me up, partly because of the hot sex scenes and jungle heat, but mostly because it pissed me off. I thought this book which combined two of my favorite themes (jungle and road/cabin romance) would be great but I ended up disappointed. Granted this was an oldie, originally published 1986, so I should probably allow some leeway, but threats of rape turn me off. (Grade: C-)
