Have you ever finished a book and wondered "What the heck just happened here?" That is the exact feeling I got when I finished Joy Fielding's The Wild Zone. And not in a good way. Seriously, I am still sitting here shaking my head going, huh? I usually love Ms. Fielding's novels, but this one was just so over the top it is going to take me awhile to get over it. Not to mention even risking reading another one of her novels. And after reading some of her other reviews, I can see that I am not alone. Try again, Ms. Fielding. I know you can do better than this drivel.

I am a big fan of Joy Fielding's books, but was a bit letdown by The Wild Zone. I couldn't connect with any of the characters, was particularly put-off by one of them, and I figured out what was supposed to be the surprise ending. I wouldn't recommend buying this book, but will definitely look forward to her next.

The premise of this book had my interest; three guys in a bar make a bet over who can get the girl sitting all alone. She chooses the only likeable one of the three, and so the story begins. We learn she has an abusive husband, and the reader sees she might use these guys to get rid of him. That's it. Nothing else happens although people get beat up and wave guns around a lot. They also drive a lot. They flashback a whole lot. I cut from the middle of the book to the end, hoping something would happen, but no luck. I started reading again at the climactic scene, and although I has skipped a lot, I hadn't missed anything I needed to know. The ending is completely predictable, but the people are so unlikable, you don't care who wins or loses. Fielding does not leave one character cliche unturned. The Army vets are all wackos, all parents are abusive/neglectful/crazy/sadistic/sexually exploitative. Women are victims. All mean are beasts. And amid all the flashbacking there is very little action to propel the story along. You just go from one tiresome memory to the next. There is one unintentionally funny scene where one of the guys is working in a gym as a personal trainer and flashing back while he works with a client. It's downright dangerous. He tells her how many reps to do based on hotel room numbers he remembers and the like. It was the highpoint of the book. Others have said that Fielding used to be a favorite author and I'll probably try an older one. As for The Wild Zone, even if it's free you should get a refund.

I have read many of Joy Fielding's books and enjoyed them, but this one was the WORST. I'm not prudish, but what is with all the swear words on almost every page! Don't we hear excessive bad language in the movies and TV, do we have to read them too? Not me! Couldn't finish it--characters, plot and writing were horrible. Hope she does better in her future books.

Why do authors we love and enjoy reading a dozen of their books, sometimes twice, do they suddenly change their genre and dish up stuff that was the go some thirty years ago? Her last couple of offerings were not worth more than a few chapters. Used to be rivetting and difficult to put down, but not so now. This sort of stuff you can read about in newspapers.
