The authors direct the book at someone contemplating running a business on the web. You have been thinking about starting a new business, or moving an existing one from the real world onto a website. The text deliberately treads lightly on the computer jargon. It is not a book meant for or restricted to a computer programmer. Instead, it clearly goes over the many issues involved in running a website. One of these is the need for shopping cart software, if you are going to be selling a bunch of items. Several possibilities are offered. You can hire a programmer to write custom code. But be warned. This could be $15k or more! Or you can license code from several shopping cart vendors a list of these is given. In general, you should probably pursue the latter, to minimise your initial capital expenditure. Indeed, the general advice offered is to watch your expenses. True for any small business, not just one migrating to the web. Search engine usage is another important topic well discussed by the book. Optimisation tips are proferred. So that when someone goes to a search engine (Google, Yahoo,...) and types in terms related to what you are selling, that your website might come up in the first 2 pages of free ('organic') results. Most users don't look beyond these 2 pages, so you want to be here, and as high up as possible. In addition, you can bid on the paid text ads. But of course that can get pricey. The optimisation advice is correct and should be carefully followed by you. Much cheaper, and it really does help you write good, relevant web pages.
