Willful Child: Wrath of Betty

From New York Times bestselling author Steven Erikson comes a new SF novel of devil-may-care, near calamitous, and downright chaotic adventures through the infinite vastness of interstellar space.

The continuing adventures of the starship A.S.F. Willful Child. Its ongoing mission: to seek out strange new worlds on which to plant the Terran flag, to subjugate and if necessary obliterate new life-forms, to boldly blow the...

And so we join the not-terribly-bright but exceedingly cock-sure Captain Hadrian Sawback and his motley crew on board the Starship Willful Child for a series of devil-may-care, near-calamitous and downright chaotic adventures through "the infinite vastness of interstellar space."

The New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen series has taken his lifelong passion for Star Trek and transformed it into a smart, inventive, and hugely entertaining spoof on the whole mankind-exploring-space-for-the-good-of-all-species-but-trashing-stuff-with-a-lot-of-high-tech-gadgets-along-the-way, overblown adventure. The result is an SF novel that deftly parodies the genre while also paying fond homage to it.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for the Willful Child series

Willful Child is a love letter to Star Trek and its fans—a pitch-perfect tour de force.”—Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of Red Planet Blues

“Cleverly written and brilliantly funny with a charming, handsome—and self-absorbed—hero at the center of the story.... With an imaginative plot, plenty of action and a lively pace, Willful Child and Erikson do not disappoint.”—RT Book Reviews

Willful Child is a gloriously snarky send-up of Star Trek, a hilarious chronicle of either a mad genius or a cunning egomaniac and a space opera that covers all the usual galactic bases with wit and charm.... The adventures of Hadrian Alan Sawback are way too much fun to abandon after just one voyage on the Willful Child.”—San Jose Mercury News

"This parody of TV's Star Trek from the author of the popular fantasy series Malazan of the Fallen doesn't take itself at all seriously. Cocksure and ridiculous, Erikson's Captain Kirk stand-in blusters his way through every crisis with a strange combination of luck and bravado.... [A] natural companion to John Scalzi's Hugo Award winner Redshirts." —Library Journal

We first met the crew of the starship Willful Child in 2014 in a fun, joke-filled Star Trek spoof. This adventure of Capt. Hadrian Sawback (an even more vain, cocksure, oversexed version of Star Trek's Captain Kirk) has him and his crew under scrutiny from his superior officers, who are just waiting for Sawback to screw up again.—MM
