Overview

William McKinley (Encyclopedia of Presidents Series) by Janet Riehecky

Ohio Republican William McKinley gained national attention during six terms in congress and later served as governor of Ohio. Elected president in 1896 and reelected in 1900, he helped make the United States a world power, annexing Hawaii, and gaining possession of Puerto Rico and the Philippines following the U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War. McKinley sent U.S. troops to help protect U.S. business interests in China and pressed plans for a canal across Central America. He was a popular president known for his warm personal manner and his effectiveness as a speaker. McKinley was short by an assassin in September 1901 and died of his injuries a week later.
