Overview

Nominated for the 2016 Philip K. Dick Award

Labor organizer Padma Mehta is on the edge of space and the edge of burnout. All she wants is to buy out a little rum distillery and retire, but she's supposed to recruit 500 people to the Union before she can. She's only thirty-three short. So when a small-time con artist tells her about forty people ready to tumble down the space elevator to break free from her old bosses, she checks it out — against her better judgment. It turns out, of course, it was all lies.

As Padma should know by now, there are no easy shortcuts on her planet. And suddenly retirement seems farther away than ever: she's just stumbled into a secret corporate mission to stop a plant disease that could wipe out all the industrial sugarcane in Occupied Space. If she ever wants to have another drink of her favorite rum, she's going to have to fight her way through the city's warehouses, sewage plants, and up the elevator itself to stop this new plague.

Great fun and quick paced adventure with an unusual vision of how a colony might function, or not. Heroes fighting more than one form of corruption, against all odds, against a system set up to favor mega-corporations, with space ships, trade unions, sewers, bars, things zipping around really quickly, boat travel, and plantations. Have I mentioned the rum? My advice is buy the book and read it.

I don't write many reviews and in my profession as an IP attorney I am extremely critical of books. Windswept has warranted a review. It is very simple, Windswept is a great book. Great in the sense that it is very well paced. Great in the sense that it is internally consistent. Great in the sense that the characters are well fleshed out and are flawed but likable at the same time. This book shocked me as I normally find the issue of labor unions to be uninteresting. Amazingly, Mr. Rakunas not only makes the Union concepts fun to read, but the Union itself is almost like an overarching character that plays a part in the story although unseen. Even the title of the book has a deeper meaning than a "windswept" area. I will not ruin the book by giving a plot synapses or tell you about my favorite character. It ruins the fun. What I will do highly recommend this book for anyone looking to step outside of the standard cookie cutter space opera or sword and sorcery novel. I am very impressed with Mr. Rakunas's vision, as it took me well outside of my usual range of science fiction reading, and look forward for the next installment in this series.
