Reviewed by Michelle Stanley for Readers' Favorite “Either give me more wine or leave me alone.” – Rumi. Perhaps you should make your own wine instead. Kyle Richards gives you the opportunity to do so with his book, Wine Making for the Total Novice. He gives a historical introduction to wine and its origins, its three categories, The Process of Wine Making and Benefits of Making Your Own Wine. The types of grapes that one should use is also included. Varieties of fruits are flavourful substitutions for grapes, and wine making kits are readily available for purchase. The systematic instructions are very simple and easy to follow. Another chapter emphasises the importance of sanitization needed to achieve the desired success. The Benefits of Wine section is impressive too. Resveratol is an anti-aging compound found in grape skins. I started making homemade wines and liqueurs in my early teens, so I was delighted to read Wine Making for the Total Novice. Kyle Richards has written a short, but informative book that has made me more knowledgeable on the subject of wine and techniques used. Some of the things I really appreciate are the helpful sections such as Different Kinds of Wines highlighting their distinct flavours and proper pronunciation; and the Common Terminology, which explains the meaning of words such as Barnyard-y, Bouquet, Aroma, Buttery, Earthy, Flabby and Leggy. The Wine Tasting chapter is another interesting one that shows how to identify a good vintage. This book has given me a wealth of information on selecting and making better quality wines.
