Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Alt is in no hurry to get to the bloodshed in her mild sixth paranormal mystery featuring Stony Mill, Ind., psychic empath Maggie O'Neil, Alt's first in hardcover (after 2009's Where There's a Witch). When Maggie's sister, Melanie, goes into labor, Maggie rushes to the hospital. En route to the delivery floor, Maggie gets stuck in an elevator, where she overhears an ominous conversation between two men (“It's in the bag. No way she'll ever suspect. Not until it's too late”). Maggie later breaks her foot after missing a step on the hospital stairway, offering an opportunity for her hunky wizard boyfriend, Marcus Quinn, to invite her to stay with him while she mends. Plenty of make-out scenes pass between Maggie and Marcus before a corpse turns up. The explanation for the suggestive dialogue she heard will strike many as a letdown. Those expecting only a simple puzzle tacked on to the heroine's continuing quest for romantic fulfillment will be satisfied. (Apr.)
Kirkus Reviews
Though Maggie O'Neill isn't overly impressed by her witchlike powers, she can't help but be pleased when a little voice in her ear helps solve a murder. Maggie has succeeded in hiding her hot romance with hunky Marcus Quinn from her inquisitive mother until she gets a call to rush to the local hospital. Her perfect sister Mel is about to give birth, turning Maggie's romantic night with Marcus into a very long night indeed. Stuck in an elevator, she overhears a mysterious conversation. Even more interestingly, her sister gives birth to twins that no one in the family expected. In the waiting room, the family strikes up a conversation with prospective first-time grandparents Joyce and Harold Watkins, who are overjoyed when their daughter-in-law produces a long-awaited baby boy, but troubled when she cuts off all her baby's hair and hides his bassinet card. The last straw in a strange night comes when Maggie trips on the steps and breaks her ankle. She loves being pampered by Marcus, who takes her to stay at his house, but there's little rest for either of them when Mel's husband takes off and a man is shot at the Watkins's house. Maggie and Marcus persist until they unravel all the strange happenings. Maggie's sixth (Where There's a Witch, 2009, etc.) is for those who like a little mystery with their romance.

I discovered M. Alt's books earlier this year and really enjoyed reading them. I quickly went through the series, and looked forward to this latest installment. Unfortunately, this book does not live up to the others. The witchiness is barely there. The solution to the mystery is obvious early on; perhaps the real mystery is why Maggie can't see what's going on as early as the reader can. Maggie's boss Lis, Enchantments, and the people who are usually found there are barely mentioned. Even Minnie the cat is absent for most of the book. Instead of being interested in the mystery, I was obsessing about how Maggie could be walking around in the same clothes for a few days. I really enjoyed the first five books in this series, and I hope we can get back to business as usual in the next installment. This book was not terrible, it just wasn't up to par with the others.

I generally enjoy this series very much, but was extremely disappointed in this newest offering. The story D-R-A-G-G-E-D, and when something did happen it was generally random and unnecessary. Case in point-I sincerely hope the next book deals with the Melanie situation, as it was merely a confusing/pathetic sidenote in this one. And while I enjoy reading mysteries very much, because I am a horrible sleuth and am therefore always surprised (lol), I actually figured most of this one out fairly early. I will definitely read the next book, but I will not pay for it in hardcover form again. Oh, and just a tip-Using. Periods. Between. Each. Word. In. A. Sentence. For. Emphasis. Gets. Old. Very. Quickly.

I eagerly awaited Madelyn's next book in her bewitching series and I was very sorry. There was very little of the bewitching that took place in her other books. She spent most of the book building up the romance and forgot about mysteries and bewitching. It is like she can't decide which genre to write in and so is writing in several and doing poorly at it. Am not sure I will purchase any more in the series.

Maggie O’Neill is back in another good mystery. Right off the bat this book will be five butterflies. Maggie uncharacteristically, wanted to be done working at the store early that afternoon. She wanted to get her butt over to Marcus’s place so that they could watch movies and maybe do something more… That is until her mom called Liss who then called Marcus who told Maggie to get to the hospital asap. Maggie was pretty much busy with doing all the things her sister and mother wanted her to do at the hospital while waiting for her sister to give birth to her baby. Or in the case babies that no one knew about. Not even Felicity knew about the babies. The day after Mel gave birth to her twin girls Maggie was on her way out and going to her job when she broke her ankle. Maggie was thrown into a loop over the conversation she heard from the elevator and has been trying to figure out who the people were while trying to figure out who they were talking about. That right there has been the biggest mystery especially considering the weird way that Dr. Dan has been acting around Steff. Steff is Maggie’s best friend. Marcus has also been trying to get Maggie to stay put so that her ankle could heal which is turned out to be pretty hard. Since Maggie has too many things to worry about right now. Like helping her sister with the twin girls while her husband is missing, figuring out what happened to the teen that died, figuring with why Tony Nunizo was killed, and to heal her ankle. Madelyn Alt has woven a great mystery book as once again I didn’t guess who the killer was, once again. That has been becoming a trend for me as I haven’t figured out who killed the person that got killed in any of Madelyn Alt books. Anyways until next time enjoy this book review brought to you by Baroness' Book Trove. To read more book reviews like this one please go to my book review blog site @ baronessbooktrove.
