Overview

Hello. My name is Stevie Cartwright, and I've been witchless for thirty days.

If only there was a support group for down-on-their-luck ex-witches who've had their powers slapped right out of them (literally). Just as I was licking my wounds after returning to my hometown of Ebenezer Falls, Washington, and navigating my suddenly non-magical existence with the help of my familiar, Belfry, things got sticky.

Enter an ex-spy and newly departed spirit named Winterbottom, who's infiltrated my life with his sexy British accent and a couple of requests . . .

Thanks to Belfry's successful attempt to use me as a human antenna to the afterlife, I can somehow hear Win. I should be ecstatic; helping departed souls used to be my witch specialty. It's like I got the teensiest piece of my old life back. Except Win's dropped me right at a dead woman's feet . . .

AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 5 Narration 5 Story 5 Quirky, funny and utterly madcap as the rush to solve the mystery of who murdered the fake psychic Madam Zoltar, and just how Stevie managed to arrive home minus her powers, fall under her familiar, Belfry’s influence, and just why there is a spy (in spirit form) giving her hints and tips. Dakota Cassidy managed to spin an utterly plausible mystery in the middle of an utterly implausible set up with witches, spirits, magic and mortals all mixing together in ways unexpected and fresh. Stevie hasn’t had things easy for a while now – her powers are gone, yet she can still communicate with spirits and her familiar, Belfry, hasn’t deserted her. Yet. While the mortal world is looking at her as the prime suspect, she’s obviously got no reason to be – and a whole host of supporting characters (some more developed than others) to help her dig through clues, dead-ends and suspects to come up with the correct solution. Fast paced, snarky and full of twists and quirks that keep you guessing just as much as they delight with unique moments, this is a great start to a new series, and one that you should grab and listen right away. Narration for this story is provided by Hollie Jackson, and her work is quickly becoming some of my favorite, particularly with quirky characters and fast-paced plots: in fact, she’s a perfect match for Stevie: youthful, adventurous and rather offhandedly snarky without crossing over into overdone. Other characters are distinct and clear, Jackson’s narrative style tends to the subtle: presenting the story clearly and cleanly, taking moments that are needed to absorb information (or laugh) without disrupting the flow or losing interest. A great intro to both author and narrator and a favorite start of a paranormal cozy for me. I received an AudioBook copy of the tile from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Lots of humour, but also some heart and danger, to remind you that despite the paranormal, this is a murder mystery. Took me right out of my stress!

I enjoyed this book. it was a tad slow at first but that is expected with any new series as you have to develop the characters and the plot. as I stated I did enjoy this book.

This book is so entertaining and fun to read. A cozy mystery with a defunct witch who is a witch no more and her familiar. A familiar who is not a cat but a tiny bat. Ms Cartwright is at the end of her savings and is not sure what she is going to do when her familiar talks her into standing on a cliff in the rain while he tries to communicate with a spirit from the other side. Something she used to be able to do before she lost her powers as a witch. Only getting bits and pieces, they start back to their hotel when Ms Cartwright sees a building with Madame Zoltar’s name and her business as a medium on the sign. They decide it’s a sign that they should go in and this is where her life takes a huge U turn. The more you read the harder it is to put down because you just can’t imagine what’s going to happen next. Highly entertaining.

All books about witches turned detectives make the same mistake; the authors think the books are funny. Instead, the witches are really stupid women with no clue to solving a crime and are not entertaining. Not interested in continuing series.

This was a refreshing change from the garbage I have been trudging thru. I thought it was me losing my sense of humor. Not so. This book was light hearted with no actual witchcraft or devil worship of any sorts.

This book was a very fun book to read. Stevie, the main character, is funny and likable. The side characters are engaging as well. The story line flowed and kept me interested until the end. I couldn't put it down.

Too stupid to live, but she did, and I hope, since the author wrote sequels that she gets smarter.Being a woman myself, I'm not amused when the heroine does one foolish, inane thing after another. I gave 3 stars because this author writes well, no typos or misspellings, I just didn't like any of the characters except Belphry her familiar, who is a bat. Maybe it's just me, if you like your characters dumber than dirt then by all means give this book a try.
