I enjoyed this first in a new series. Tori comes for her Grandmother's funeral and stays to figure out her future and fix up her grandparent's property, including a bait shop and rental rooms. Tori's best friend comes to help out and a friend from the past shows up. The three of them all have their own problems and quickly bond to solve a murder. I liked the characters and look forward to getting to know them and Lotus Bay as the series continues. I will admit that I did not see the "murderer" before it was brought to my attention. As much as I enjoy Lorraine Bartlett and her Book Town mystery series, I felt the murder mystery part of this book came almost out of nowhere. Surprises can be good, but this one felt a little out of place, in my opinion. That being said, I still look forward to the next book because the town and the characters drew me in. I have to know what happens next in their world.

Lorraine has done it again! In this new series, we are introduced to Tori Cannon and her best friend Kathy Grant. Through a series of unfortunate events Tori moves to Lotus Bay to help her grandfather out after her grandmother passes away. Tori enlists the assistance of her her best friend Kathy in repairing her grandfather's bait shop and she takes on the task of repairing the motel that has been neglected since her grandmother became ill. After the discovery of a body in the motel, the best friends become involved in the murder case, which brings the dead man's daughter, Annisa, into their group as they work to find out what happened to him. Honestly, I could not put this book down and enjoyed getting to know these new characters. As always, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

The beginning of the book was very compelling.  I read a sample and was so hooked that I had to buy the book right away.  Tori has a lot going on in her life, things haven't worked out as she had planned and hoped, and now her grandmother has died and she is going to stay with her grandfather for awhile.  Her grandparents owned a bait shop which has fallen to neglect and disrepair.  Tori realizes that she has always felt happy there and wants to stay, but her grandfather has other ideas - and of course there is the body she finds and a few other complications. As Tori begins to settle in the book starts to bog down a bit.  Her Grandpa Herb isn't all that likable most of the time, and Tori and her friends Kathy and Anissa are sometimes annoyingly immature for grown women.  At times they are almost like three high schoolers in how they talk, think and act.  The book seems a bit rushed, which might account for why it feels like Tori and company are not thinking things through as well as they should. That said, this was a very enjoyable read and I didn't want to put it down.  The mystery was solved with a twist that I hadn't expected and lives are starting to sort themselves out.  There are a lot of possibilities for Tori with the bait shop and Kathy with her B&B and Anissa with her construction work, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series to see what is in store for Tori next.

Our friend Lorraine Bartlett has a great new book for us to look forward to. In fact, it's the 1st in a new series The Lotus Bay Mystery. After the death of her much loved Grandmother, Tori and her Grandfather return to the old, run down motel units, where they live in the most pleasant one. It may not be the best way to live, but that's where they are for now. Tori's BFF Kathy, after losing her job, turns up to cheer them up and also to lend a hand in repairing the motel and Grandpa's bait shack. Tori and Kathy become involved in a murder case, and discover a smuggling in an agandoned house in town. FTC Full Disclosure - A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

Tori Cannon and Kathy Grant became best friends in college, where they were roommates. The years have gone by, and Tori is an out-of-of work English teacher, and Kathy, working in the hospitality field that isn't always too hospitable to her. After going to her grandmother's funeral in Lotus Bay, Tori decides to stay with her grandfather a little. She has ideas of fixing up the Cannon compound: a bait-and-tackle shop and small motel. It's no small feat. The run down tackle shop has been losing business for years, and the closed motel became a place for her grandmother's hoarding. Even worse, they find a body crammed into one of the motel's rooms. Tori enlists her friend Kathy's help in doing a little house-cleaning at her grandfather's business, and they soon find themselves solving the mystery of the dead body. I really love this book! It's a fresh, new cozy with lots of great characters. Lorraine Bartlett brings Lotus Bay to life with her writing and I found myself reading it straight through, enjoying every page. There's even a short story, "Panty Raid" in the book as a bonus, which introduces the characters. I like the idea of two best friends solving mysteries together. It's a great book to share with your best friend!

Tori Cannon has decided to stay behind and help her grandfather out after the funeral of her grandmother. But the job itself may be bigger than she expected. First, her grandmother bought junk and other assorted items and crammed them into every corner of the small motel they ran and the home they lived in. Second, the bait shop her grandfather runs is in a very dilapidated shape. Finally, there's that pesky dead body crammed into one of the motel's units. This is the first book in a new series for author Lorraine Bartlett (aka Lorna Barrett) and has a very different feel from her Booktown Mysteries. Having said that, the cast of characters of Tori, her friend Kathy, and their new acquaintance of the dead man's daughters are an interesting trio and I look forward to reading more of their adventures. Solving the murder itself takes a very circuitous path with hints of UFO lights and a final resolution that was totally unexpected. Disclosure: I was provided an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Tori Canon has returned to Lotus Bay to attend her grandmother’s funeral. Having recently lost her job as a teacher due to cutbacks Tori convinces her grandfather, Herb, to let her stay and help him clean and fix up around the Canon Compound. Since her grandmother has been ill for a while the house, bait shop, and motel has fallen into disarray. Tori and Herb are walking around taking in what needs to be done and finds a dead body inside one of the rooms of the motel. Tori’s best friend Kathy comes to help Tori not only with the cleaning but with emotional support. After arriving Kathy falls in love with a house that most would say needs to be torn down but she is determined to buy it and turn it into a B&B. The body Tori finds just happened to be the father of one of her childhood friends Anissa Jackson. Anissa what to know who killed her father so Tori and Kathy agree to help. Can the three women find the killer? Will Kathy get her house? Will Tori have to find another job or can she convince her grandfather to let her stay on and run the businesses? This is the first book in the series but my 2nd, I really enjoyed seeing how Tori, Kathy, and Anissa friendship began. I love the relationship between these three women, how they support one another through loss and their dreams even when those dreams seem to be a lost cause to others. I love how Herb is kind of grouchy and doesn’t what to give in to Tori’s wanting to take over the rundown businesses. This shows that he really does care for his granddaughter even though it seems like she hasn’t had that from a lot of people in her family. Mrs. Bartlett is wonderful with the imagery. I can really see how run down the buildings are and how much stuff the grandmother has accumulated over the years. The mystery was kept me guessing who was behind the murder and why since it seems that no one really had a reason to kill Mr. Jackson. I recommend this book to mystery fans. I was given this book in hopes I would give a review. All thoughts and opinions are that of my own and in no way been influenced.

As a child, I love the Box Car Children. I don't know why but this book took me back to that time. The interactions of the characters are so charming. The nail biting end, wow. I can't wait for more in this series.
