#1 USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and sizzling Slow Burn series with this fourth book—a mesmerizingly sexy tale of a strong, brilliant woman who encounters the one man who makes her lose all control.

Eliza Cummings fought free of a monster who terrorized her when she was an innocent teenager and helped put him away for good. She took a job with Devereaux Security Services and devoted every hour to taking down the very thing she’d nearly become. No one, not even those closest to her, know her darkest, shameful secrets. But now the killer has been set free on a legal loophole and it’s only a matter of time before he comes for her. Eliza's only choice is to run and lead the monster away from the people she loves.

Wade Sterling has always lived by his own rules, a law unto himself who answers to no one. He’s never professed to be a good man, and he’s definitely not hero material. Wade never allows anyone close enough to see the man behind the impenetrable mask—but one woman threatens his carefully leashed control. He took a bullet for her and the result was more than a piece of metal entrenched in his skin. She was under his skin and nothing he did rid himself of the woman with the courage of a warrior and who thinks nothing of putting her life before others.

But when Wade sees a panicked and haunted Eliza he knows something is very wrong, because the fool woman has never been afraid of anything. And when she tries to run, the primal beast barely lurking beneath his deceptively polished façade erupts in a rage. She may not know it, but she belongs to him. This time, Eliza isn't going to play the protector. She was damn well going to be the protected. And as long as Wade breathes, no one will ever hurt what is his.

Every 5 pages seem to repeat. The character will stop right in the middle of an action and do 5 Pages of what he's thinking .... his hopes his dreams what they were doing when he was 16 I kid you not it will go on for five pages before they come back into the room. You forget where you even started from after a while. The sad thing? She already gave you that same information 5 Pages before in the last chapter .If it was only once it would be understandable perhaps something they missed while editing. This unfortunately is done over and over and over and over and over. You could finish this story in a harlequin novel in under fifty pages .She Rambles so much she could do a European vacation in between pertinent information. He seathes... she's terrified.. yes yes enough already now on to something pertinent.

This book is lacking. It reminded me of her last KGI book. Half of the story is filled with useless thoughts from the characters. Her books used to grab my attention from page one. Now, I can barely find the will to finish them. Get it together Maya.

This was another recent book by Maya Banks that spent the majority of the time in the character's head with continual repetitive thoughts. I have read all of Maya's books and have loved them all except for her last 3. I'm not sure if I'll buy another book from her. Very disappointed.

Had high expectations based on the other books in this series, but this one was not as good. There was way too much internal thought and long conversation and minimal action.

I just skipped page after page of meandering thoughts that lead to nowhere.... seriously when did a MB book become boring... not even close to being romancic or steamy... barely warm...

Everything just repeats over and over and over again. Its hard to follow along because not only was it written in the last paragraph but in the last chapter and like every 5 pages ..Its hard to picture the tough strong Eliza as a meek girl who needs someone to do her dirty work. Come on Maya!!!

There was too much back story. If you read the series you know what is going on, you do not need it retold. This book lacked chatacter interaction. There is too much of their thoughts (page after page). It felt like I had to search for the story. It was not suspensful like the rest of the series. I was barely able to finish the book..I was sad to find it so dull.

I loved the entire series, but I can’t find the last book of the series where the sister and the head of their security team that used to care for her fell in love but now I don’t see it??

*I received and ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review* Maya Banks has been one of my favorite authors ever since I discovered her in 2012. I am drawn to her books in a way unlike most authors can do. Her writing is fast paced, steamy and full of unexpected plot twists and turns. Maya has a way to take you on an adventure with each new book, and pull you into the world she illustrates seamlessly. With Every Burn is my first book of this series, I have been behind on catching up on this one, but now that I have entered the world of the Slow Burn Novels, I can’t wait to go back and read them all. In With Every Burn we get the story of Eliza. She is in hiding and has been for years. She keeps dark secrets and stays hidden from a killer locked away. That is until a loophole sets him free and she just knows it’s inevitable he will find her. She has protected herself for years and built up a career in a field to help protect others. She is full of personality and a very strong female character. Especially for someone who has experienced what they have in their past, she has not let it dictate who she is. But what she has become in her life and career has defiantly been guided by what she needs to do to stay hidden. Then we meet Wade. Wew, Wade! Let me tell you, Maya did such a great job with his character and I can just picture him so vividly, it makes this story feel even more real. When you can create not only a world for readers, but give such great portrayals of the characters, it’s like watching it unfold on the big screen or in real life. When things start to unravel, he knows he must protect what is his; and Eliza belongs to him. She doesn’t need protection, she can protect herself, but he won’t allow her to fall into a situation she’d ever have to. With her past creeping up on them, he knows he must protect her at all costs. The chemistry between these two is some of the best I’ve read by Maya and I just love how strong both characters are and how in tune they find themselves with one another. With all the added suspense and crazy twists, this book pulled me in from cover to cover and had me on an emotional ride of my life until the end! Great job Maya and I can’t wait to go back to the beginning of this series now!

This book finally answered the question of Eliza, with an amazing conclusion that made me shout with joy. This is a great read from start to finish.

This fourth novel of Ms Banks series, Slow Burn, is another winner. The storyline captures from the start. It’s a standalone, but if you have been a fan of the series, you will absolutely love this story. Characters from previous stories of the series, will make an appearance and by now you feel they are part of your family. In this novel, Eliza and Wade are the main characters. Eliza, a member of DSS (Devereaux Security Services) has a past she did not divulge to her partner or the rest of DSS. She was an innocent 16 year old when she got involved with a monster that promised her love. She thought she had escaped her past, but it’s coming back when the man of her nightmares is released from jail. She decides to separate herself from her team in order to protect her friends. Wade, a wealthy art gallery owner has an obscure past. He has had a volatile relationship with Eliza, but took a bullet for her in a previous story and is determined to help Eliza . The story is full of suspense, heart wrenching moments, gruesome moments, some paranormal situations, redemption, revenge, hope and finally love. So get ready for this riveting ride. Intense. Captivating. So emotional. I could go on for an hour about this book. Maya Banks writes suspense that sticks with you. Once you start reading, you better not have plans because you won't be able to stop. Eliza put away a murderer ten years ago and now he's getting out on a technicality. Kind of. He has the power to change people's thoughts. (I loved the psychic twist to the suspense.) Eliza believed she could live in peace without worry of him coming after her, but the phone call changes everything. She knows she needs to get away from all that she loves or he'll hurt them. She works for DSS (a security company who rescues people), so why she didn't tell them what was going on was a little mystifying. But I think in the same situation, I'd be thinking similarly, that I need to protect instead of involve them with a cold-blooded murderer. Unfortunately (for her), Wade Sterling just isn't going to let her walk away from her life (or him). He's the penultimate alpha-male. No one tells him what to do, he lives by his own rules (which may or may not coincide with the law), and he never lets go of what's his. He and Eliza have this tension that borders on hatred (it seems). It's fun to see them banter. He's arrogant enough to be annoying, but once you start seeing how he feels about Eliza, you start melting, just like his icy exterior. He might keep the air of arrogance in public, but with her, taking care of her, he's just the sweetest, swoon-worthy man. He really puts his heart on his sleeve. I couldn't get enough. I think there were some times where I was asking, "why would this person make this choice," but with a little thinking, I do think they were all decisions that real people would have reacted to in the same way. I've read one other book in this series. You can read them as stand-alone novels, but reading them in order would help make the story complete. This one mentions a lot of the previous missions and horrors the girls went through, but while it might have been nice to know the missing parts of the story, I still found this very enjoyable. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Maya Banks is an author that I have been reading since her Pregnancy and Passion series was originally published in 2013. Her Harlequin stories are treasures that I repeatedly return to and are a major part of my favorites collection. I had no idea about her double life as a suspense writer, so it took me a while to wrap my head around the bone chilling terror of With Ever Breath. Only a twisted mind could torture an innocent in the way Eliza endured. Her experience has made her stronger and determined to protect others from her haunting history. Emotionally scarred, yet her inner strength was to think of others. An exceptional character. Wade and Eliza are united by darkness but the courage to rise above all of that is the true message. Addictive, heartbreaking and glorious story of the courage of two wounded souls searching for redemption. Had to finish, hard to forget.
