Overview

With Every Heartbeat by Linda Kage

I used to think everything was black and white, truth or lie, easy or hard, that if I could just escape my strict, overbearing, abusive father, my life would be perfect. But since I’ve found a reason to risk his wrath and leave, to help a friend in need, I’ve come to realize everything I thought I knew is wrong.

Friends have their own agenda, honesty comes with a dosage of lie, easy doesn’t even exist, keeping secrets sucks, and love...love is the most painful thing of all.

Maybe if Quinn Hamilton hadn’t asked me to skip classes for the day and help him pick out an engagement ring for my best friend, I wouldn’t have fallen for him so completely on that sunny Tuesday afternoon and I wouldn’t feel so conflicted. But I did, and I can’t take it back, no matter how hard I try. So I have to deal with the fact that even I’m not as good, or honest, or caring as I’d always thought I was, and no matter what I do next, someone’s going to get hurt. Probably me.

-Zoey Blakeland

First thing I would like to say about Linda Kage's With Every Heartbeat is I LOVE the cover. It's says so much about Zoey and Quinn’s (Ham) characters. Quinn and Zoey have lived a quite shy life, but are so deeply committed when it comes to a romantic relationship. They are both introverts, and both have had an abusive childhood. Both were home-schooled until they started their high school years. And because of Zoey’s overprotective father, she hasn't been around boys much, or allowed to date. Quinn is self-conscious. So yeah, college life holds a new environment for Zoey and Quinn. Quinn has had time to adjust to the college, since he's a junior and on the football team. But he too has never had a girlfriend until he started college. And the girl that just so happens to be Quinn's girlfriend and introduces Quinn to his first in everything is Zoey's best friend, Cora. I just want to say, no, this story is not about cheating. It's about being naive to who you thought you trusted and discovering the hard truth about who you thought your friends are and those that are supposed to love you. For Zoey and Quinn who are introverts, leave it to college life to strip them of their naive blinders and welcome them into the wild side of life. With some hard, ugly truths about family, lies, and deceit. The last part of this book was like witnessing a tennis match. Linda Kage blew me away with Zoey and Quinn. I kept saying, Oh, that's what the big secret is…and then BAM, BAM, and then BAM, BAM, BAM!! Linda Kage put me through a whirlwind hurricane with the ending and I loved every intense minute of it. Amazingly well done, Linda Kage!!! I don't believe I have ever read shy characters from Linda Kage, but she did a beautiful job with Zoey and Quinn's characters. They touched my heart so deeply. I love Zoey and Quinn's story, but I gotta tell you I'm looking forward to the next book in the Forbidden Men series. And yes, it's going to be with Ten and Caroline. Ten is a little bit of a bad boy but mostly he's a player with no mouth filter. Ten already had me doubling over with laugher, and Caroline is definitely the girl that can tongue tie Ten's smart ass mouth, and the boy who likes to play. I highly recommend With Every Heartbeat with Zoey and Quinn. And the whole Forbidden Men series as a must, must read.

Upon finishing, my initial reaction: Holy wow, did I love this one! <3 My Thoughts (full review): This is my first book by Linda Kage. I saw a tweet about this book, read the synopsis, and I gotta tell ya, I was intrigued. As soon as I started reading, I was so captivated by the characters that it was difficult to put the book down. I definitely stayed up wayyyyy too late trying to finish--I had to know what happened! Quinn and Zoey have this instant attraction, but it isn't insta-love, not even insta-lust either. It's there, below the surface, and the two of them are curious about each other. Since Quinn is dating Zoey's best friend, Cora, they both know that anything more would be crossing a line. They become friends and discover how much they have in common and the deeper connection they have. When some horrible things come to light about Cora, Quinn and Zoey are drawn to each other like never before. Even though they want so much more, there are still some issues that need to be resolved, including one revolving around a secret even Zoey isn't aware of. Will Quinn and Zoey be able to pull through and find each other in the end? With Every Heartbeat was a surprisingly amazing book! I just expected a sweet little story, but I was given so much more. The depth to the characters, their backgrounds, the realistic and sometimes painful facts of life. Everything amounted to an epic kind of story you rarely find. I'm glad I found out about this one, because now I'm going to pick up another by Linda Kage soon! My Rating: Very Good

This is the first book I have read of Linda Kage's and I can safely say it wont be the last!  After walking away from her old life, Zoey Blakeland moved to be with her best friend and to help her, although what she found wasn't the person she thought she knew. Zoey was a fantastic character who grew so much throughout the book. Quinn is in his first ever relationship with Zoey's roommate Cora, but feels an attraction to Zoey. I don't want to say too much and spoil the book but Quinn and Zoey were made for each other and I was so happy when they finally realised about Cora!  Absolutely loved it and I have already purchased the previous 3 books to read along with a pre-order of the next! Highly recommended.
