Too many Navy novels today spend all their time trying to be technical manuals. This book doesn't. Instead, McDaniel puts his considerable skill as a writer into creating a set of believeable characters, thrown into combat under tremendous pressure. I could easily picture these characters; several of them reminded me of people I served with. The choice of the German Navy, at the very end of the War, works well. Not only is there the need to excel in a type of combat that has already killed most of their mates, but everyone knows, at least deep down, that the war is lost. Kruger, the captain, knows this better than anyone, and the conflict between his sense of duty and his humanity is all the more intense because of it. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure story.
