Overview

Emma has everything she could ever want: a well-paying job, a great apartment with views of Puget Sound, and a handsome fiance who loves her. But when she sees her old college crush, and he reminds her who she used to be, her life begins to fray.

Emma didn't realize how much she needed music in her life.

The more time she spends with Owen, and playing the piano, the more distant her fiance gets. Secrets begin to build until Emma is forced to make a choice: stay with her fiance, in the life she's comfortable in, or she can follow her heart--even if she'd not sure where she'll end up.

Love is complicated. So is trying to figure out your path in life. Nicole Tone explores both in her debut novel, Without Benefits. Emma is caught in a love triangle with two men and two cities, but she wants more than anything to express the song of her soul. My favorite aspect of the novel was the undercurrents of sound and space. Music is a huge part of Emma‘s life, and her struggle plays out like a melody as she navigates through love, friendships, and letting go. The sense of place is also very strong – the emptiness and pain of leaving New York behind, and the natural beauty and opportunities of Seattle. The reader will feel like s/he is walking the streets of Seattle alongside Emma, and anyone who has ever tried to face demons from the past will relate to the feeling of being pulled and pushed from the place that holds those demons. I recommend Without Benefits to anyone who enjoys a good love story that allows room for the self.
