About the Author

Bob Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois, during the 1930s Depression. As a child, in lieu of speech, he scribbled pictures, receiving little encouragement in this endeavor. At the age of thirteen, he moved to live with his grandmother in Los Angeles in an effort to escape his mother’s attempts at suicide, neighborhood violence, and poverty. Attending high school in Los Angeles, he received encouragement from art teachers who saw his art potential.

Following junior college and Korean War military service, he attended the Art Center College of Design on the GI Bill. After graduation in 1958, he secured work as an advertising and editorial illustrator in major commercial and entertainment entities in the Los Angeles area. He eventually founded Blacksmiths Cards & Prints, Inc., an international Afro-centric greeting card business.
