Platypire Reviews by Mel WOLFSGATE by Cat Porter *was generously given a copy in exchange for an honest review… THANK YOU WOLFSGATE by Cat Porter is a standalone, gut wrenching, and an amazingly wonderful historical romantic fiction novel that I STRONGLY suggest to be added to everyone’s MUST READ list.  I had the good fortune to stumble across this amazing new author when I read her debut novel, LOCK &KEY, which was a MC novel with a twist. I loved it so much and gushed about it for weeks, so when I saw that her next novel was about to be released, I did not even look to see what it was about and just signed up. I was a little worried when I first read the blurb because I normally can never get into historical fiction. I always wind up hating the hero because they are usually full of themselves and the heroine usually whines and has no backbone. NOT THE CASE WITH WOLFSGATE. I so loved this book. From the first, I was intrigued with why Brandon was in the situation he was in and then Justine was so strong and determined. So many wrongs were done to each of them and I wanted redemption for them both. Somehow, these two miraculous characters find love and each other. I was surprised how much I rooted for both of these two to be together and find who did the wrongs and why.  I was captivated with the story and who was the villain. WOLFSGATE is full of twists and the chemistry between Justine and Brandon is exciting. I loved WOLFSGATE and it was most definitely a home run for me. I plan on reading anything Cat Porter produces and cannot wait for more from her. Her writing is flawless and is a true artist with her words.  WOLFSGATE receives 5 out of 5 Platypires!!! Texas Hugs and Happy Reading!!!

Historical readers expecting a fun and carefree read set amongst the backdrop of glamorous balls should look elsewhere as this is a gritty read full of pain and angst. With nefarious family members, dastardly deeds, and a couple put through the emotional wringer this book grabs you with an intense tale full of twists and turns. Brandon and Justine's lives have been manipulated throughout the story and by various individuals which leaves them only able to count on each other. Though they start off knowing very little about each other their connection quickly deepens as their shared pain unites them. For Brandon, his missing years and drug addiction have left him lost and unsure of his place in the world and as Justine's husband. Justine has suffered mightily too as a pawn for others but her hidden layers of strength show a strong-willed woman smarter than others give her credit for. Their shared pain also leads to numerous steamy encounters which brings them even closer together and solidifies their much-deserved HEA over adversity. This is a deep read dealing with heavy issues and is full of unexpected twists and turns. There's a gothic feel to the story with its suspenseful elements and manipulative family members. As a reader who usually reads the lighter historical works of Julia Quinn and Sarah MacLean this story caught me off guard. The overall storyline is unique as are the characters and their issues, but there was a coldness to them that kept me from connecting to them completely and keeps me from loving this story. I very much admire it though and will definitely read more of this author's historical books in the future.

I still can not figure out how to tell you about this book.  The fact that it's five stars says quite a bit, but it still doesn't tell you everything.  I knew the story wasn't going to light and fluffy from reading the blurb, but I wasn't expecting it to be all consuming either.  I read this book in two hours from the first page to the last page.  The Gothic feel of this romance will captivate you, just as it did me.  My interest was captured the moment I read the prologue and only deepened as I continued reading. Brandon and Justine were fascinating characters. Both of them knew each other, but were strangers at the same time, and dealing with not only their own demons, but fighting off those who wanted to hurt them. I loved Justine as much as I wanted to avenge her.  She may have seemed calm and collected, but she had a core of steel.  In a time when a woman was considered nothing, she managed to be resourceful. I so badly wanted to avenge Brandon for the wrongs done to him too.  He seemed so sad and lost to come back and find everything he had known changed.  Part of what I loved beyond the characters, was the intricate story itself.  There were quite a few surprises and plot twists that made me gasp and sit up straight. There were very few times when I laughed, but there were plenty of times when I cheered for Justine and Brandon. There were also a number of times when my blood boiled by all the injustices that were revealed. I'm so glad Justine and Brandon found each other.  I have no idea how they managed to cope and I REALLY do wish the villains in the story had been punished further, but then again no amount of suffering visited upon them would've satisfied me. I'm so very glad I read this book.  It's stimulating and deep, while still managing to entertain and take you on a journey you won't soon forget.  Cat Porter's intricate novel is a wonder and I'm glad I've found her books now, although the wait for her next one will be excruciating.  In the mean time, I've got her debut novel Lock & Key to read.
