Woman of God by James Patterson, Maxine Paetro

A new Pope will be chosen in Rome . . . and she just might be a woman. But she's made some powerful enemies who will stop at nothing-not even murder.

The world is watching as massive crowds gather in Rome, waiting for news of a new pope, one who promises to be unlike any other in history. It's a turning point that may change the Church forever. Some followers are ecstatic that the movement reinvigorating the Church is about to reach the Vatican, but the leading candidate has made a legion of powerful enemies who aren't afraid to kill for their cause.

From a difficult childhood with drug addled parents, to a career as a doctor on the front lines in Sudan, to a series of trials that test her faith at every turn, Brigid Fitzgerald's convictions and callings have made her the target of all those who fear that the Church has lost its way-dangerous adversaries who abhor challenges to tradition. Locked in a deadly, high-stakes battle with forces determined to undermine everything she believes in, Brigid must convert her enemies to her cause before she loses her faith . . . and her life.

From a civil war in Sudan to the drug dens and law firms of Boston, Woman of God spans the globe with a thrilling tale of perseverance, love, trust and what it means to live in a fallen world.

You can't help but love the self sacrificing Brigid and admire her faith and love for God and humanity.

Great novel addressing all the issues facing the Catholic Church today. Couldn't put it down once I started it. ?

This is a quick read and the book is a page turner with good characters. The string of things that happen to the heroine strain belief a bit but if you just go with it, the book is enjoyable

Topic was an interesting choice and i applaud the barbs at the catholic rules but way too many ill things for the heroine to have going on- i found myself almost laughing and saying what next and this is ridiculous.

This was one of Patterson's best. Long after I finished reading it, I still felt as though I was in the moment with Brigid during all the trials she had faced. Actually feeling the anger at God when she was in South Sudan and then the love and closeness when she came home. A must read for literary lovers!!!

I only need to turn on one of my Chicago news channels (over 240 shootings month to date ) for violence so I stopped reading any Patterson book long ago. This book is much different & better than anything they've ever written. Finally a Patterson book that makes me sit back, think about & believe he's right inn his God portrayal

I enjoy James Patterson's style of writing with the short chapters and the rapid action. This book begins with the death of the Pope, and the possibility of a woman becoming the next Pope. The story follows Brigid Fitzgerald in her travels to South Sudan, Egypt, Italy, France, and various states of The United States. Much of the book focuses on the terrible conditions and horrible events of South Sudan. Brigid, as a medical doctor, attempts to save these desperate people. Brigid endures loss of many cherished friends and family but keeps hammering away at helping others. Sometimes, Brigid seems more beloved than Mother Teresa, Patterson's gives Brigid too many "superhuman" characteristics, and the story suffers.

My bookclub is reading this book. I thought it was a great departure from the classic James Patterson. Read it twice.

Seemed that the plot was rather predictable and themes repeated. Meets man. Falls in love. Man dies She gets shot. Gets married. Has a baby. Talks with God. Works in clinics.

This book met me in a very stressful time and spoke to me in my faith journey. Gods timing in bringing a secular book, recommended by a friend, who while reading it “kept thinking how much I would like this book “ pointed me to it. She was right!

Not being a grand fan of Patterson's, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the story moved quickly and kept my curiosity at bay long enough to finish this book. Understandably, there is a "Co-Author" here of Maxine Paetro, which kept the female lead, Brigid, alive and well-spoken. Overall, the story was written well, with shortened chapters that keep you on edge of your next page. The trials and tribulations that Brigid go through in the story are heartbreaking, to say the least but give the reader the "burning car crash" they need to see the story through. The reader of this book will be more curious to see how the life of Brigid play through and will leave the imagination open just enough to allow the reader to picture Brigid moving forward.

Completely ridiculous. Starts off strong, but becomes too far fetched.

A very good read and a page-turner. You are caught up in an emotional tizzy to see if she will be the first female pope. I loved it!
