Overview

Oscar William Coursey tells the story of a Filipina named Marie Sampalit. When her lover dies in the hands of the Spaniards, Marie swears to avenge his death. She uses her charm and ability to get into the good graces of the enemy, first the Spaniards then later the Americans, to accomplish her mission of revenge and act as a spy for the revolutionaries. In the course of avenging her lover's death and fighting for Philippine independence, she learns to shoot a firearm, gets involved in the torture of Spanish soldiers, does household chores and laundry for the Americans and provides information to help the Filipino cause. She attempts and succeeds in shooting down General Lawton for a $10,000 reward but is forced to disguise as a man to avoid detection. Her last mission as a spy leads to her capture and eventual death by firing squad.
