About the Author

John Todd (1800-1873) wrote over 30 books, including The Student's Manual (1835), which went through 21 printings before 1856; his works also appeared in children’s periodicals.

"Gail Hamilton" was Mary Abigail Dodge (1833-1896), American essayist and one of the founders of Our Young Folks, a popular magazine for children. (Theodore Roosevelt read it as a boy.) Many of her essays for The Atlantic Magazine appeared in over 14 books.

Pat Pflieger received her PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota. She is the author of A Reference Guide to Modern Fantasy for Children (Greenwood Press) and a book on Beverly Cleary (Twayne Publishers). Her research on early American periodicals for children appears on her website at merrycoz.org.
