About the Author

Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan. She received her B.A. from Yale University and her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her award-winning research has been funded by major grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation, and several private foundations. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with her husband and son.


Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, PhD, is the author of the bestselling Women Who Think Too Much and Eating, Drinking, Overthinking. A professor of psychology at Yale University, she has conducted award-winning research on women’s mental health for twenty-five years. She and her research have been profiled on the Today show and in The New York Times. She lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

I bought this book without even opening it, based on the title. I consistently analyze everything in my life...what if this happens, should I have done this, what did that comment mean? The author explains how thinking too much can literally stop one from being able to make good decisions, and even lead to depression. She also does a great job of explaining why women are especially vunerable to overthinking. Then she gives techniques to help us stop overanalyzing. When I started reading this book, I instantly felt relieved knowing that I am not the only woman alive who does think too much. Highly suggest.

This book is sensitive to the pressures of contemporary society that increase "overthinking" and it is especially perceptive about the situation of women in America today. The author explains that overthinking is more than just worry, as worry about future events can be a constructive form of negative thinking. Overthinking is usually rumination about the past and negative self-thoughts that can get out of control and become chaotic. The book has useful "quick reference guides" that summarize helpful strategies described in the middle chapters. Overall, I found it to be an informative and very helpful book.

I have read alot of self help books that I usually do not finish. I loved the style and context of 'Women Who Think Too Much' and read every page. I could relate to her common sense approach to help women put a stop to over thinking. It has helped me realize that it is OK to say 'STOP' when my mind is racing.
