Title: Wonderland - A Coloring Book Inspired By Alice's Adventures Author: Amily Shen Publisher: Ten Speed Press Published: 4-5-2016 Pages: 80 Genre: Entertainment Sub-Genre: Crafts & Hobbies; Drawing; Colored Pencil ISBN: 9780399578465 Reviewed For NetGalley and Ten Speed Press Reviewer: DelAnne Rating: 4.5 Starts Intricate detailed drawings depicting scenes from Alice in Wonderland. I chose this one because of my sister who loves to color. Drawing and painting may not be her forte, but she can make pictures she has colored and shaded vibrant and art worthy. These are done in a light enough pen that the lines may not show through the color. I did purchase the book for her for her birthday. My rating of "Wonderland - A Coloring Book Inspired By Alice's Adventures" is 4.5 out of 5 stars
Wonderland is a beautiful new adult coloring book form Amy Shen. Inspired by Alice"s Adventures in Wonderland, I think Wonderland is more than a coloring book. . .It offers a chance for you to give Alice a new adventure with your colored pencils. This beautifully illustrated coloring book tells a bit of Alice's story through the pages. You can meet the Cheshire cat, have tea with the Mad Hatter, and play croquet with the Queen of Hearts. Besides coloring delicate scenes, Wonderland offers a few places for you to draw in your own pictures. For example, you may add butterflies to a page with two butterflies or add a few owls to the page with three owls on it. There is also a maze and a series of puzzles on "the playing car's scroll." I especially enjoyed the extra activities along with the coloring. Wonderland is best colored with well-sharpened colored pencils as most of the designs are fairly intricate. Some pages the coloring picture takes up the whole page and on some pages, there is a smaller design to color along with the story. I also tested markers on one of the smaller designs to see if they bleed through the pages. They do not. The pages are a lovely thick paper. There is also a dust jacket type cover that can be removed and colored on the back to make a sort of long pretty poster page or a pretty back side hidden on the dust jacket, something I am sure Alice would have liked. I think this is a great book if you are a fan of Alice in Wonderland and coloring. I am a fan of all things related to tea so I especially liked the tea time pages with the butterfly motif-ed teapot. I would definitely recommend that you add this great coloring book to your coloring book staff if these are among your favorite things. I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
Wonderland: A Coloring Book Inspired by Alice's Adventures by Amily Shen is a beautiful new adult coloring book featuring the Wonderland classic theme. This is a beautifully detailed coloring book for made especially for older readers. These beautiful scenic drawings in of themselves are a work of art. Unlike other adult coloring books filled with impossible to color geometric patters and laborious minuscule detail, this book is actually fun to color with its beautiful and playful illustrations that are not overly detailed with repetitious geometric patterns, but detailed just enough with fantasy images. The beautiful binding features a removable jacket as well as a cover that can also be colored as well. This makes a great gift for yourself or a friend or literature enthusiast . The luxurious quality of this book, thick pages, and elaborate art, is unexpected considering its affordable retail price. Its an affordable luxury certain to brighten up anyone's day. Armed with a sharpened set of colored pencils, this book can become a personalized masterpiece to treasure and even pass down. Although it is marketed for readers of all ages, it is most suitable for teens and older adults due to the detail. I do not feel a grade schooler would appreciate the fine detail of this book, and it would be a shame to destroy a beautiful book with scribble. This is a coloring project that takes time, perseverance and patience. For those who persevere and complete this book- it will make a beautiful keepsake volume. I could imagine many readers who appreciate art will hesitate before making the first stroke with their pencils as well. Some of these pages can take hours to complete- maybe more than the time allowed in one sitting. It takes patience. Be sure to have a pencil sharpener handy when starting this book. Don't bother with crayons or markers. The story line and theme is like a bedtime story. I feel as if this would also make a beautiful book if it was full color rather than a coloring book. I almost would have preferred this to be a traditional full color story than a coloring book. As a blogger I received a copy of this book published by Watson Guptill for the purpose of writing this review.
If you are a fan of Alice in Wonderland, Johanna Basford's coloring books, and/or Daria Song's coloring books, Wonderland is a coloring book that you need to add to your collection. Wonderland is quite beautifully done. It is not just a coloring book, it also tells a story as you go along. Sometimes it incorporates words to detail parts of the story and other times it is just told with the pictures. Also, there are pages within the book that ask you to add your own drawings to he pictures to complete them. Letting you use not only your coloring skills, but also your doodling/drawing ones! Now, unfortunately, the pages, while they feel thick, are double sided. So unless you don't mind disrupting the story contained with in and losing another work of your coloring art, you probably won't be pulling out a page that you really like to frame and put up on the wall or gift. I am also hesitant on using markers on it, but like I said the paper is pretty thick. So I may get up the nerve to see if the markers I have will bleed through on a not so favorite page. Alice in Wonderland has always held a certain appeal for me. The wild colors and names. Abstract ideas. I even played the role of the Cheshire Cat in our high school production. How thrilled I was when I opened Wonderland and found myself absorbed in the world of White Rabbits with pocket watches, Dodo birds, Mad Hatters and THE Queen of Hearts. There are nine "chapters" and at the beginning of each one is a short summary of the story as I venture through Wonderland. The illustrations are beautiful and they allow my imagination to soar. There are puzzles along the way as well. (And the answers are in the back of the book.) Thick pages with printing on both sides. Easy to draw on with colored pencils. Let your creativity run free in this marvelous story and express your own personality in Wonderland! I received a free copy of Wonderland from the publisher through Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
What a fun 80 page coloring book! The pictures lead you through the story with wonderful pictures and the Alice's Adventures story to read too... I got to follow the White Rabbit into this delightfully illustrated coloring book. I got to meet the Cheshire Cat, attend the Mad Hatter's tea party, and play croquet with the Queen of Hearts. Nice paper for coloring and a very nice book cover, makes for a very pretty display book. If you enjoy this new fad of adult coloring, this coloring book is indeed a WONDERLAND to enjoy!
