As the historic festival marks its 40-year anniversary, Rhino presents Woodstock - 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm, a 77-song, six-CD box set that features the most comprehensive lineup of artists who performed at the original festival. The collection is sequenced in chronological order of performance, featuring 38 previously unreleased recordings, including the Grateful Dead, the Who, Tim Hardin, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & the Fish, and others. To assemble this musical retrospective of the myth-steeped weekend, the set's co-producer Andy Zax pored over every inch of multitrack tape in search of the strongest parts of each of the 33 sets. "The way we approached all of the material was as if it was a cinema verité documentary -- the raw record of the event," Zax says. In addition to the music, the set offers a considerable amount of ancillary material sprinkled throughout the discs -- stage announcements, psychedelic musings, the sounds of rain, a cameo appearance by Abbie Hoffman, and the graciousness of Max Yasgur's address to the crowd, heard for the first time in its entirety.

Woodstock: 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm [Box Set] 4.3 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 8 reviews.

How can one review something that has not been released yet and worse show your ignorance by not knowing who the Incredible String Band was? This collection will be for serious fans of music and not the obvious dilettante above. Before you comment publicly, do your research about music.

This Great set seems to be designed for the Woodstock fan who already has the Movie as this Box concentrates more on the acts that didn't make it into the Movie or got left out of, edited, or minimal representation in the earlier audio releases. Yet it also includes many (but not all) key elements from those earlier releases. This box set is a revelation! They present the acts AS they actually performed that weekend, warts and all, and it's a joy to listen to. Of all the releases that have come out this year in celebration of the 40th Anniversary, this box is the best of the bunch. The included book is good, not great, but a fun read. It does include the much needed list of Acts and songs in their correct order. The original intentions of the makers (as expressed in the book) was to create a 30 CD box with the entire 3 days included, but trying to get the legal permissions established may keep such a mammoth box from seeing the light of day for another 40 years. I do agree with an earlier reviewer that "Goin Home" from Ten Years After should have been included, but what they have given us in this 6 CD set is certainly cause for celebration. It gives the best representation of the event so far. There is room for improvement and hopefully when the 50th comes around, we will get even more of the 3 days in audio and in video (hope I'm still around in 2019) but this set will keep me happy for the next decade.

WHERE'S "I'M GOING HOME," TEN YEARS AFTER; and why does Country Joe McDonald get more tracks than any other performer??
ZoranM More than 1 year ago
Well produced music, original sound tracks, comments which back a listener to challening time of 60's and 70's, to great wish to make this world better. It is amazing to hear very young voices of Joan Baez or Janis Joplin, non-crashed voice of Joe Cocker and many others. It is the music for ever!

What, no Ten Years After!?! And way too many "Country Joes" and "Incredible String Bands" (whatever that is?). Thanks Mr. Zax, you saved me 60 bucks!
