First published in 1986, this collection of short poems compares the word that names the animal to its form or character. The results are uneven. Sometimes, the connections lend themselves naturally to poetic comparison. Other times the comparisons seem forced and contrived. There are some dated references (technology has changed a lot in the past twelve years!) and the black and white drawings in most cases do little to enhance the text. Meet the Author

Barbara Juster Esbensen's many books include Who Shrank My Grandmother's House? Poems of Discovery and Cold Stars & Fireflies: Poems for the Four Seasons. In 1994 she joined a select group of poets to receive the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children.

John Stadler is the author and illustrator of The Adventures of Snail at School among others. He lives in Lyme, New Hampshire.
