Modeled on "Market Share Reporter" ["RBB" Ja 1 91], this collection of global market-share data was compiled from periodicals and government publications. Some tables are limited to one country (e.g., "Top R & D Firms--Japan"). Others list brands or companies for a region or the entire world (e.g., "Color Television Brand Leaders" or "Global Media Companies"). The largest number of tables rank countries on a topic (e.g., "Man-Made Fiber Production Worldwide"). A few tables seem anomolous: "Destinations of Emigrating U.K. Scientists." Some entries include bar or pie charts. Each table notes its source; many are foreign publications. Tables also note SIC number, International SIC number, and Harmonized Commodity code. Arranged by SIC number, the 1,632 tables are indexed by source, place-name, product or service, company, brand, and SIC codes. These indexes list not only the subjects of tables but also the brands, companies, or countries on the tables. The place index shows that European countries and Japan are most heavily represented, but more than 100 nations are listed on tables. Toshiba is the most frequently cited company; Renault, the most frequently cited brand. Lists of International Standard Classification coverage and Harmonized Commodity code coverage are in an appendix. For libraries serving international business, this is an essential purchase. Researchers in economics and political science will also find it useful. But browsers will also be fascinated by some of the tables here: cellular phones in Europe by country, top-10 grocery brands in Europe, leading toiletries producers in India, leading restaurant chains in France (McDonald's is second on the list).
