This 1997 CD reissue brings back one and a half albums (originally put out on the World label) by the World's Greatest Jazz Band. An entire Gershwin tribute from 1977 is here plus half of the group's Rodgers & Hart date from 1975. The WGJB's tribute series was generally not as freewheeling as their other projects, with some of the ensembles being arranged and the solos often being briefer than usual. There are some hot moments on this CD, particularly during such Gershwin numbers as "Liza," "Strike Up the Band" and "'S Wonderful." Heard from on these interesting, if not quite essential performances are trumpeters Yank Lawson and Billy Butterfield (replaced by John Best on the earlier date), clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, trombonists George Masso and Carl Fontana, either Eddie Miller or Al Klink on tenor, Ralph Sutton or Roger Kellaway on piano, bassist Bob Haggart, and Nick Fatool or Gus Johnson on drums. ~ Scott Yanow
